Looking for family of Alexander Mullen ca 1798

My ancester, Alexander Mullen, was born in Ireland in 1786 and arrived in USAin1798. I am trying to find his parish and any family information available. He married Jane West, of Irish-English descent, in South Carolina, US, and died in Madison County TN in 1853. Any help would be appreciated.

Very few parishes have records back to the late 1700s and civil registration did not begin until 1864.

I searched the Roots Ireland indexes for Alexander and found two records. One was in 1789 in Co. Antrim and the other was in 1796 in Co. Down. No records for 1786.

More than likely your Mullens came from one of the Ulster counties.

Roger,

Thank you so much for your swift reply. I'm planning a trip to the UK again this coming summer and will spend a few days in Ireland while there. Do you have any suggestions where I could search for more information? I'm checking ships on ancestry.com, trying to find when he arrived and if he was alone since he was only 12 when he arrived in America. I wondered if the Rebellion had anything to do with his leaving Ireland, and have searched in the Dublin area without results. Family legend mentioned Wexford, I believe, but I have no idea if that's valid. No one really remembered. Alexander did well once he reached America, became a landowner in several counties, so I wondered if he perhaps had some kind of subsistence when he arrived or was just a very clever lad. As you no doubt perceive, I'm totally lost in where to serach next, so appreciate your Ulster suggestion. I will begin there.

Again, thank you for your swift response, and for helping so many people connect with their past. I am very proud to be of Irish descent, as are so many Americans, and your aid is invaluable.

You may want to try the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland. They have some records online but if you have time to go to Belfast, you can view a lot more records. The reality is that it may be difficult to find exactly where he was from. http://www.proni.gov.uk/

Have you considered taking an autosomal DNA test.

By the way, I live in Maryland.

Roger,

I've visited a Northern Ireland site last night in my search, but didn't have much luck. I really need to learn how to navigate the search engines properly. I found a Dublin site, and since I know I'm going there this summer, if all else fails I can go to the research center while there to see if I can find anything. My best bet may be to find the ship he arrived here on, as that will help a lot. If I have time, I definitely want to visit northern Ireland. I always thought we came from the southeast, but am pleased to have found clues to Alexander's origins.

Ancestry.com offers a DNA test that I'm going to take once I learn more about how good it is. I've researched another site, and am not certain which is the best. Some reviews were less than good for Ancestry.com, but there are always people who don't get what they expect.

Most of the Irish is on my mother's side, although my dad's side has Scots-Irish and Welsh as well as Dutch. I've managed to trace part of my mother's lineage back to 1058, believe it or not, and was amazed at all that is available online. Of course, other people did most of the work, it seems, though I was able to take the info and do my own verifications. We abound with Jacobites, a castle or two (lost to Cromwell), and I'm sure quite a few rogues. I delight in the rogues. ;-)

I used to live in Maryland as a teenager, back in the 60s, and spent some time on Chesapeake Bay, too. I'm an old dog (hence the difficulty of learning new tricks!), but was a military brat. Maryland is a beautiful state, although I lived right outside DC and that had its trials as well as advantages. I remember Maryland quite fondly,

Thank you for the link. I will check it out next.

Virginia:

I used FamilyTree DNA for my DNA tests. I have been satisfied. DNA testing is not a  genealogy panacea but you may be able to break down a brick wall or two.
