Looking for Cunningham family

I have been researching my family tree and have come accross a bit of a mystery. My Gran is Tess Jordan (nee Cunningham) and she grew up in the The Derries, Rahan. She is one of 13 and we know that the eldest child Joseph died as a baby, but we do not know where he is buried. It is possible that he is buried with his grandfather also Joseph Cunningham in Durrow, but when she visited the church they could give her no information.

The baby would have died around 80-90 years ago but I have no specific dates which is why it is so hard to find information.

My Gran and her siblings attended the Island Church in Rahan, so it may also be possible that the baby is buried there. I would be grateful for any help, even if it is just to confirm that the grandfather Joseph Cunningham is buried in Durrow, again I have no specific dates but I know that Joseph Cunningham was married to Sarah Clancy in 1878.

I would be grateful for any information that could be provided,

Hi Cara

There are 2  church burial records of Joseph Cunningham in Offaly on www.rootsireland.ie/

Both give his age as 72 & year of death as 1863

http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=1&confirmPageView=Y

rootsireland is now a subscription site

1 record is from TULLAMORE Civil Parish & the other is from TULLAMORE Church of Ireland

These are the only death / burial records I found for Joseph Cunningham in Offaly so no baby records I'm afraid

There is a Joseph Cunningham in The Derries in 1901 age  60years but his wife is Sarah age 45 years.  They have 8 children at that stage.

Have posted your request onto the Rahan page on Facebook so maybe someone will be able to help.

Hi Geraldine,
The Joseph Cunningham that you mentioned is the grandfather of the baby who died, and I believe that he died between 1901 and 1911 as he does not appear on the 1911 census, nor do any of his children. It is a possibility that one child Annie ended in Birr workhouse but the age is slightly wrong on the census.

Thanks

Hello Cara

Did you contact the Workhouse in Birr - I know there are very few records available but it might be worth a try.  If she was sent to Australia on the Female Orphan Emigration Scheme there would be a list on some passenger lists.

Very few names survive and the records have minimal value for tracing family history.

The names and addresses of 65 orphan teenage girls aged 14-18 who were granted free passage to Australia in 1848-50 do survive in shipping registers and some of their descendants have visited Birr.

See http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ for comprehensive general information on workhouses in Ireland, England, Scotland and
Wales.

P.S. Still waiting for someone to come back to me on Cunninghams from The Derries - he said to give him a few days

Hi Geraldine

Thank you for the information

Gran just back from Ireland this week
I have all the info that you have given me it is just that my gran was never certain that he was buried there as the church in Furrow could give them no information.

I have managed to put together the Cunningham family tree up to my great great great great grandparents

Thanks again

Hi all,

~~ but I know that Joseph Cunningham was married to Sarah Clancy in 1878.

I am very interested in this as my paternal grandmother is a Clancy from Kilpatrick or as it was known The Island in Rahan.  This is not a common name in the area, as far as I know there was only one Clancy family in the mid to late 1800's.  My great grandfather was Joseph Clancy (b. 12 Sept 1869. M. Anne Keane 24 Apr 1890.)   Joseph was the sacristan for the Island church and had the (now ruins) cottage across the road from the church.  My guess is, going by the years involved, that Sarah Clancy was an aunt of Joseph Clancy and so would be a sister of John Clancy, Joseph's father.  I would love to expand this side of the family.  I wonder can anyone confirm the connection?

Also does anyone have a list of (parish)priests in Kilpatrick church as this may lead to clues as to why the Clancy's moved there in the first place?

Hi Gerry,

The Sarah Clancy that I have was recorded as Mary Clancy at the baptism and was born in 1860 so she was just 18 when she married.

Sarah's father was a John Clancy married to M. Coughlan (I am unsure of what the M stands for).

Sarah's family was definately from Kilpatrick, so it looks as though she is related to your Clancy's although it sounds as though from the dates that Sarah was a sister of Joseph Clancy.

I hope this helps and any information that you could give me on the  Clancy's would be fantastic.

Thanks

St. Patrick’s Church, The Island, was built by Fr. Robbins who was curate in Rahan from 1834 to 1847. The Island was formerly called the Island of Clonkeen. Bishop Anthony McGeoghegan, O.F.M., of Clonmacnoise, ordained St. Oliver Plunkett priest and deacon, in Rome in 1654. He later retired to Clonkeen and ordained priests in Ballycumber and Clonkeen during the penal times. The church was formally dedicated to St. Carthage but is now dedicated to St. Patrick

Hi Cara

This is the confirmation I was looking for.  Sarah is the older sister of Joseph Clancy.  The M stands for Margaret as per Joseph's birth certificate.  Sarah would be a greatgrand aunt of mine.  Can you give me any info you have on Sarah and her father John such as dates of birth or marriage details?  I would really appreciate it.  All I have relates to Joseph.  John was a farm labourer as well as being the sacristan of the local church.  I have a picture of the house somewhere taken in the '60s when it was still lived in.  It had three rooms, a main parlour/kitchen and a bedroom either side of it.  Joseph took over the house after John and my grandmother was born in it as I assume so was Sarah.  It is a pile of blocks now.

Thank you Geraldine for that. I will follow that up.

Hi Gerry,

At the minute I am awaiting Sarah's marriage cert so as soon as I have it I can let you know more information.
I spoke to my Gran and she says that she remembers the Clancy's living in the cottage.
