Looking for ancestor ggg grandmother Mary Bourke

Thank You Dear Roger McDonnell for your search!

I may be wrong, but it seems like the women in this particular Bourke/Morris line were off by about 7 years whenever it came to posting their birth year! I would assume by the death record for my ggg grandmother Mary Bourke-Morris that she would have been born 1822. But because I have seen a similar pattern in the reporting of age being off by 7 years, I now think the Mary Bourke you have here born 1815 might be a more accurate date for her baptism.

The other thing that caught my attention with the 1815 Mary here, is the old Irish naming pattern. Mary's daughter....her 2nd daughter was named 'Ellen' which is the same name of this Mary Bourke's mother (Ellin).

I am still looking in Ballingarry as well as this is where Mary's husband was from and where they married 1849 (very difficult in this parish as the priest won't let anyone look at the records....my contact there however, knows the secretary :)  This may take time. Husband William worked for the Irish Mining Company as a coal engineer. They lived in Earlshill but there are a lot of little communities there where Mary could have originated that are now gone. Through dna matches (distant cousins), they reported a 'Wm. Bourke' from Killenaule as their ancestor.

For now, I think your 1815 entry in Killenaule is my closest possibility :)  Thank you so much for doing this research. I will be in the Killenaule area 20-22 March!  (I love the song about Killenaule!)

Blessings,

Hi Katy,

I'm the parish liaison for Ballingarry and know Killenaule and Gortnahoe areas as well as I have family connections there also. If you are planning a visit I can arrange for a local historian to meet you who would know all about the mining history and could connect you with people in the areas your ancestors originated from.

I hope you enjoy your visit!

Noreen

Thank you Noreen!

I would be most grateful to you for helping me make these connections.

How could we best communicate regarding my itinerary and contact information while in Co. Tipperary?

Blessings,

Katy

Hi Beth,

I'm on my way to Co Tipperary and will need to get back to you. Please remind me mid- April. I will be thinking of you and your ancestors as I make my way around the Slieveardagh region.

In briefly looking at your Ancestry Tree, you have a lot of information! Fun reading about the Ryans! Not sure if information about William and Catherine are solid but will look into this later.

I did see a possible connection with my Morris family however.  If accurate, your Laurence Ryan, baptized 1818 in Ballingarry Parish lived only 6 miles from my William Morris possibly born 1818 as well...3 months earlier than Laurence. My William became an engineer in the coal mines in that area. Possibly they went to school with each other/worked in mining? My William lived in Ballingarry area until retirement and then moved to Tuam, Co Galway. He didn't immigrate but his son William's family did. We came to NY first and then RI and then in 1904 Los Angeles, CA.

A more remote connection may be with a Paddy (Patrick) Ryan b. 15 March 1851 in Thurles, Co Tipperary. He immigrated to NY (Troy at one time) and won the heavyweight championship in 1880 and retained that title until 1882 when he was defeated by J Sullivan. (check Wikipedia) My great uncle Parker (Patrick) was baptized 14 March 1875 in Ballingarry Parish. Obviously my family knew about Paddy and admired him so much they named their 2nd son after him! Our uncle changed his name once he immigrated about 1890s to Parker!

Blessing to you! Katy (Oregon)
