Longford Rifles & John White Sargent Major

Looking for some help with finding more about my great-great Grandfather John White of County Longford -Strokestown, Ballymahon area.

I have managed to trace our “White” family tree back 4 generations to our Great-Great Grandfather John White. I have a photo of him, but no further personal history. I need more.

We do know he had at least one son John White (1860 – 1927 and at least one daughter Elizabeth McCormack (nee White) (1865 – 1938). We have plenty of evidence (personal history) for that brother and sister, their relationship and their off- spring.

Now here’s the thing… I have found a John White (born about 1822 & who died 3 JUN 1900 • Strokestown, Roscommon, Ireland). He was married to a Eliza Jane Powell ( maybe ‘Power’) born abet 1820 who died 9 SEPTEMBER 1893 at Longford, Ireland. Her death record shows her husband as “a Sergeant in Rifle Brigade and her daughter Katie was present at her death”.

Their daughter Catherine – born 13 OCTOBER 1867 also at Longford. Catherine married Thomas Gilroy 14 August 1894 at Templemichael, Longford.

There are at least three intriguing points about all this John White :

All the dates and locations would seem to fi
