Logue Research need help

Donegal

Hello, I posted for help on my O'Donnell side of the family and decided to do the same with the Logue side of my family.

Anyways, I am stuck in my research. My side of the Logue family, the farthest I can go is Roger Logue (b. abt. 1816-d. 1877) and his wife, Margaret Devine. They were Irish natives (Roger was likely from Carrigart, Ireland) who emigrated Nova Scotia, and they remained in the mining town of Saint Joggins. I am unsure as to who Rogers parents were, and also, I do not know anything of his siblings. His children with Margaret Devine were Charles (my ancestor), (everyone after Charles is unconfirmed but are very likely true), Mary, Matthew, Cornelius, Catherine (Burke), John Roger, Martha and Rebecca Logue.

Any help is greatly appreciated; I will take as much as I can get.

Carrickart is in the civil parish of Mevagh. The RC parish is Carrickart/Mevagh. Unfortunately, RC parish records do not begin until 1871 and civil registration started in 1864.

I looked up the 1828 Tithe listings for Mevagh civil parish and there were 17 Logue entries. We don't know if your Logue family were from Carrickart or a nearby townland.

I don't see a Charles Logue going on the theory that Roger named his oldest son after his father.

Have you considered DNA testing?

While there are various townlands where the surname Logue can be found in North Donegal, it is strongly associated with Carrigart/Mevagh. Cardinal Michael Logue born in 1840 was from this area ,there are various accounts of his life online. His father is recorded as Michael, I note that Ancestry sites show that the cardinal's eldest brother was named Charles. I cannot see if there is any relationship to "Roger" in your line. I believe that DNA could provide some indicators.

There is a "Logue Family Worldwide" group on Facebook where a posting may assist.

The only problem with what you guys are saying is that Charles himself was never born or lived in Ireland, ever. What I said was, was that his father and mother, Roger Logue and Margaret Devine, they were born in Ireland, then emigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada. So, Charles himself was a Canadian resident. I'm trying to figure out about Roger Logue (1816-1877), not his son Charles Logue who was Canadian Irish and not Irish Irish.

On that topic, I am unsure what year Roger and his wife, Margaret, emigrated to Canada. So in otherwords, I am unsure when they left Ireland in the first place. Assumedly before the year 1836, because his son Charles was born in Canada.

I've also checked the Logue Family page on Facebook already, I've never been able to make a connection to them. Most of the people on that page are descendants of people who emigrated to the U.S. or Australia, meanwhile my ancestors went to Canada before they ever went to the U.S. So as of what I've been able to gleam, the Logue Family facebook page has no information pertaining to my ancestors, though a lot of stuff like birthplaces seem to add up with a lot of other people who are on that page. For example, many of those Logue's originated in Carrigart, like my Logue ancestors supposedly did.

When responding, as your line was via Roger's son Charles, and had indicated that you thought it likely that Carrigart was their home area, looked for previous forename usage. I drew attention to a Charles, who was a sibling of Cardinal Logue. It is difficult in Ireland, for most people we do not have early birth/marriage/death records. The state only commenced birth/marriage and death records in 1864, the exception being Anglican weddings, recorded from 1845. While some churches have early 1800s, many did not retain records until latter in the century.

A posting of your family information on the Logue Facebook site, could generate a reply of interest.

Irish_Genie:

We were helping to determine the name of Roger's father and were looking for records of a Charles Logue. Many times a man would name his eldest son after his father.

Ah this makes sense to me, thank you guys for clarifying. I had no idea that that would happen so often, I knew that father to son names being handed down was common, however naming the eldest after the father's own father I didn't know. And this makes sense to me, because the two names that always come up when looking at trees for Roger's father is always Charles or Daniel. Interestingly, I don't have access to my grandfather's old tree (yet) but I could have sworn he had a father for Roger, and it was Charles, but I never go off things like that unless I have evidence or can remember clearly enough which sadly, I cannot.
