Limerick - O'Connor

Thomas J. O'Connor born Sept 04, 1865, my great grandfather , I have no idea who his parents or siblings were, I do DNA relate to some O'Connor's that were from Rathkeale and settled in Philadelphia, PA about the same time period,I don't know if they are first or second cousins to my great grandfather. He immigrated to Philadelphia between 1882-1884. He married in Philadelphia in 1889 and about 1900 had moved to San Francisco with his family and he passed in 1917

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The subscription site Roots ireland had three Thomas Connor baptismal records in 1865. The baptismal dates are not close to September 4th and of course, we don't know if Thomas adjusted his age when he came to America. The Athea and Templeglantine parishes are to the west of Rathkeale and Pallasgreen is way to the east.

I think you need more clues to determine if any of these records are correct or if he was born before 1865. Can you get a copy of his death record? Any clues in the 1880, 1900 or 1910 censues?

Hi Roger      Thank you for responding.  on the 1900 census it is stated that his birthday is Jan 1865 that he is age 35 he came to the US in 1884 when he was 16 ( if you go by the dates his age should of been 19 arriving in the states )  it states he was an alien.  The 1910 census states he is age 49 ( but if truly born in 1865 his age would of been 45) and it states that he immigrated to the states in 1881 which would of made him 16.........   I know he married in Philadelphia in 1889, and the marriage license did not list parents of the bride or groom but his name is listed as Thomas Conner...... i know the names get changed around a bit. He had four children in Philadelphia and i found all their baptismal records the name did flucuate with Conner and O'Connor, mostly O'Connor.  I do DNA relate to a family of O'Connors that were in Philadelphia at the sametime as my great grandfather before my great grandfather moved to San Francisco, that family was from Duxtown,Rathkeale,Limerick,Ireland, my speculation is that this family might be an aunt and uncle with first cousins to my great grandfather...  Sadly his death certificate is not too helpful, i think he was somewhat of a drinker and worked in a shipyard in Vallejo, CA while the family lived in San Francisco, my dad told me that on Fridays his father or one of his brothers would have to take the ferry from San Francisco over to Vallejo to collect the days pay before he would start drinking it away and buying drinks for his pals..........   He died on July 2 1917, his wife is listed as unknown, his age is unknown ( about 55) his date of birth nothing is written but " unknown" and then that was scratched out, name of father was written Thomas O'Connor , maiden name of mother states unknown, the infomant was my grandfather also Thomas O'Connor listed as Thomas O'Connor JR,  i dont think the name listed for my great grandfather's father as being " Thomas O'Connor" is a for sure thing because if my grandfather as infomant is Thomas O'Connor jr , my great grandfather would of been the JR......... ( hope that was not to terribly confusing to read ) again thank you so much for posting and suggestions

Hi Colleen

Just wondering if you had anymore information on the O'Connor family from Philadelphia/Duxtown, Rathkeale, Co. Limerick?

I have a relative in my tree from Ballywinter-rourke / Danesfort(h) area which is close to Duxtown. Her name was Ellen O'Sullivan and she emigrated to America in 1928. She married an Irish man named Michael O'Connor (possibly from Co. Kerry) in Manhattan in 1933, and had 2 children that I know of. They were in Manhattan in the 1940 Census but I don't know what happened to them after that.

This is probably long after your ancestors/ O'Connor relatives, but when I seen Duxtown, Rathkeale in your message I just said I'd leave a reply :)

Hi Eliza - just finding this some 5 years later …. The family from Duxtown was Thomas Connors/ O’Connor and he was married to a Bridget Quaid. They had about 14 kids and none were named Michael ….however I notice given names and names used are often not the same
