LAVERTY

AntrimGrange Killyglen (Antrim)Larne (Antrim)

Looking for Jane LAVERTY, born 1836, Larne, Antrim.

Father John, Mother possible, Ellen, maybe MCGILL. Looks like my family in the 1851 census.

Jane married Robert MCKAY in 1858. Robert from Grange Killyglen.

Moved to Dalry, Ayr, Scotland then migrated in South Australia in 1865.

Robert was living with his brother  Thomas and his wife, Mary Ann WALKER from Carrickfergus in Dalry.

MCKAY, LAVERTY names from Clare, South Australia. CRANE, GILBERT, BAULDERSTONE, JACKSON, LONDON, KNAPPSTEIN, BOWLEY (2).

You haven’t said what denomination the Laverty & McGill families were. I’ll assume RC. The RC parish records for Larne start in 1821. They are not on-line on the nli site (where most RC records are to be found) nor on Ancestry. However the Ulster Historical Foundation reportedly has them from 1828 onwards. That’s a pay to view site. So you may be able to find the childrens baptisms there.  http://www.ancestryireland.com

If the families were a different denomination, let me know what they were and I’ll tell you what records exist and where to find them. They are probably not on-line, and so it may involve a visit to PRONI in Belfast.

I can see some trees with the Larne Laverty family on Ancestry. Some of them look a bit unreliable to put it mildly. I think people may have mixed more than 1 Laverty family up.  For example, there’s a marriage for Archibald Laverty to Ann Walker of Eagry near Coleraine in 1856.  (Hutton/Bowley family). That Archibald was farming in Clougher (Cloughorr), near Portrush and his father was a farmer, not a labourer. Portrush is 50 miles from Larne. I am pretty sure that’s not the same family as the Larne one.  So don’t rely too heavily on Ancestry trees is my advice. A lot contain guesswork, which is then copied by others without any verification.

I would search Larne 1st’s baptism and marriage records. They start in 1720 (though there are quite a few gaps). There’s a copy in PRONI in Belfast. I don’t think they are on-line anywhere so you either need to go in person or get someone else to go for you (eg a professional researcher).

Thanks Elwyn forbthe reply.

I,m in Australia and got a researcher to look a few years ago. Spent a lot of money but it ended up just a scam.

Got not one piece of information.

So am reluctant to try that route again. Found Proni quite confusing. Am comparing it to how easy Scotspeople is to navigate.

With Proni, you just about need all the information already to get anywhere. Thats how I found it anyway.

Best wishes

Marg,

With Scotlandspeople most of their records are on-line, but you have to pay for them. With PRONI they are not on-line but they are available free (if you can get there of course). With PRONI you have to look the parish records up on microfilm.

Bear in mind Scotland has more records than Ireland (mainly due to the loss of the censuses and other records in the 1922 fire in Dublin). Irish research is much harder.

Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church (after which she’d usually attend her husband’s). Jane & Robert married in Inver Church of Ireland. So she may have been that denomination (Anglican). Inver COI records start in 1806. Again they are in PRONI.

I can’t see any other marriages in the Larne registration area for Jane’s siblings (listed in the 1851 census). Did the whole family move to Scotland?
