Lane/Myles families from Fermoy, Cork

CorkFermoy (Cork)

My great-great grandparents were Michael Lane and Mary Myles.  They were from the Fermoy area in Cork.  They were married in Ireland and left Ireland for North America around 1848.  I haven't been able to find any Irish birth or marriage records.            edit :Michael was born circa 1817 and Mary circa 1821

Once in the United States they lived in the Boston area of Massachusetts, though the ship they left on may have landed them in Canada first. The records I do have don't give any information of their parents or siblings.

Any insights/information would be greatly appreciated

Leslie,

I live in Fermoy and although I don't know anybody of the name Lane, I will make a few enquiries and will get back to you.

Best wishes, Kieran

Leslie, do you have baptismal info for the couple’s sons, Philip Lane b 1842 and John Lane b1846? If not, I can post it here.

Patricia,

Is there a townland addrerss of those records? If yes, that would help focus my enquiries.

Best wishes, Kieran

I don't have the baptismal records for Philip and John.  If you could post them that would be helpful and appreciated..

Thank you

Kieran/Leslie:

I had located the two baptismal records yesterday and was waiting to see what info you located. The place name is Corragh (Curragh) which is not a townland from what I can see.

Here is the link to the register for the February 8 1846 baptism of John Lane.

Record for Philip Lane December 3 1842. Place name could be Curragh or Corragh.

Thank you so much for that information (and done so quickly)

I have a question: on the record there are "sponsors" listed. On John's baptismal record the sponsors are recored as John Lane and Honora McDonald.  Do you think those would be other family members or the "god parents" or are they the wintesses at the baptism. I am wondering who that John Lane might be, Michael's brother?

Leslie:

There are sponsors and could be family members or friends. John Lane is likely a brother to Michael.

I just noticed another likely family baptismal record. If you scroll up one page from the February 8 1846 baptismal record for John Lane, you will see a January 8 1846 baptismal record for a Michael Lane with father Daniel Lane and mother Bego? Coleman. They also lived in Coragh (Corragh). Hopefully, Kieran can figure out where Corragh was located.

Leslie,

Ity seems that the address for the fgamily was Curragh. See this link to irishgenealogy.ie https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1884/06333/4816169.pdf   for the death of Michael Lane of Curragh, presumabely the father of Michael that went to Boston. He died a widower, so his wife had died before him. See this link to irishgenealogy.ie https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1882/06410/4840973.pdf for the death of Mary Lane of Crough. Of all the deaths of a female named Lane between 1864 (when records began) to 1884 (when Michael died), this is probably the best match. Mary is listed as married which means that her husband was alive, which is correct. There is a slight discrepancy in the address, but I thinbk that Curragh and Crough may be the same place, if not they are close enough to be interchangable.

I have a few other things to search and will get back to you.

Best wishes, Kieran

Hi Kieran,

Thank you so much for thoses links and the research.

I had been on that particular sight before, but didn't find those records.  I am on a few dna and geneology websites and trying to access records through those sites, there can be a fee involved so that probably stopped me.

My great-great grandfather Michael died in 1855 of tuberculous, listed on his death record as "consumption", he was 38. I am also trying to track down records about my Irish-born great grandmother, who married Michael's son Thomas, who was born in the United States.  She was a McCaffrey from Fermanagh, so I have posted inquiries about McCaffreys on the Fermanagh message board. .

Thanks so much for all your help.

Hi Kieran

Looking at the dates.

My Great-great grandfather was born in 1817 and his wife Mary Myles was born in 1821. We got the "1817" date based on his American death certificate from 1855, which stated he was 38.

So I don't think the Michael who died in 1884 was his father, but a cousin ?

Leslie,

You are right about the cousin possibility! Michael Lane and Mary Kent of Curragh were having children in the 1840s also. So there was obviously another Lane family in the townland. I can confirm that Curragh (Corragh) is called Crough now. In the Griffith's Valuation of the 1850s the spelling is Leyne in Curragh Upper. There are Michael Leyne (53 acres) and Philip Leyne (62 acres). See https://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/z/zoomifyDynamicViewer.php?fil…. In 1826 there were 3 families, William Lane had 42 acres, Philip Layne Senior had 20 acres and Philip Layne Junior had 20 acres. See http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587420/00…. Corough is located to the east of Clondulane. If you are interested in the exact location let me know and I can prepare a map.

Best wishes, Kieran
