Lally Family

Hello, I am searching for information regarding the family of my great great grandfather, Thomas Lally (c.1830-1885), whom I believe to be my first directancestor to come to the US. When he enlisted in the US Army in 1848, he gave County Kings as his place of origin. Thomas married Catherine Degnan, but I do not know where. I am working on a hunch about his relationship to a Bridget Lally and a John Lally, who also lived here in Youngstown, Ohio, in the mid-19th century. I suspect that Bridgetand John (d.1892) are siblings, and that John may be Thomas' father. Bridget may have come here as early as Thomas, but I believe that John came later. Bridget was married to James Tyrrell, and John was married to Ellen Tyrrell; both marriages I believe tohave beencontracted in Ireland. I have noticed that the Tithe Applotment Books show a John Lally and a Patrick Tyrrell living near each other in 1826, as tenants of Edward Coxe of Clara Town, in "Clara Field and Beattys Holding," in the parish of Kilbride (civil or Church of Ireland?). I am unable to figure out whether this is in the contemporary Catholic parish of Tullamore or Clara. Any assistance or information would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Pat Lally

Hi Pat

There are 2 baptism records of Thomas Lally in Offaly on www.rootsireland.ie/

One is 1825 & the other 1827

There are 5 records of the baptism of Catherine Degnan all spelt Dignan & all in Offaly: 1845 (two) 1851 1855 and 1876

I couldn't find a marriage record however.

So if you purchased the record of whichever Thomas baptism record you think is correct (1827?) on rootsireland you could then search for siblings as the record SHOULD have his parents' names.

Kilbride is not in the list of parishes at the end of the record (click on the magnifying glass) in Offaly so I couldn't narrow it doen that way.

Pat,

Thomas Lally is my GGG Grandfather. His son John H Lally (ca1854-1912) was my GG Grandfather and moved to Cleveland sometime around 1900. I haven't had much luck tracing the family back to Ireland, but I do know that Thomas was in the 105th Ohio Regiment during the Civil War. I did not know Thomas was in the army earlier. I'd be interested in learning more about the 1848 enlistment information.

Hello Pat,

I have done quite a bit of research into the Lally families of Offaly (Kings County) & Westmeath, my own Lally family lived in Westmeath during 1800's & possibly had links to Lally's from Offaly.

John Lally married Ellen Tyrrell in 1829 in Clara, Offaly.

Bridget Lally married James Tyrrell in 1829 in Clara, Offaly.

Kind regards,

James Lally.

Thank you for your posting.  Sorry I haven't replied more swiftly, but I find this a very clunky website, and sometimes can't get it to do what I want.  I do have this information regarding James and Bridget.  Do you have any information about any of Bridget's siblings or their children?  I suspect that my great great grandfather, Thomas Lally, was a nephew of Bridget.  As evidenced by local records in the Youngstown, OH, area in the mid-19th century, there's certainly some connection between my family and the Tyrrells.  Here's my e-mail:  lally8404@hotmail.com.

Hello Pat.

James Tyrrell & Bridget Lally apparently had the following children: Martin, Anna, John, Mary, Ellen, Thomas, Catherine, James, Patrick.  The last of these children mentioned, Patrick Tyrrell, was baptised in Offaly (Kings County) in 1849.

Regards,

James.

Hello James.  I'm sorry I have not replied to your last posting in a timely fashion.  I continue to have trouble with this website.  Thank you for the information on the Tyrrell children.

Best wishes
