Keough family from Holycross, Tipperary early 18th century

TipperaryHolycross (Tipperary)

I am trying to trace the parents of Mary Keogh, who I believe to have been Thomas Keogh and Catherine Costello. Mary married Lawrence Cummins and they migrated on The Orestes to Australia in 1841 with 6 children. They were said to have been from Holycross Tipperary. I have not found any record of their marriage.

I believe there is a headstone in an old graveyard of Clogher near the village of Clonoulty, which reads "Erected by Mary Cummins alias Keogh in memory of her father Thomas Keogh of Cloghane who died May 26th 1829 aged 74yrs". Perhaps this Thomas Keogh was the father of Patrick and John Keogh, who were hung in front of Clonmel Jail in 1828 for the murder of Daniel Mara. An accomplice, Thomas Keogh, was transported for life on the Governor Ready in 1829. Was he Mary's brother?

I would love to have more information on the Keough, Cummins and Costello families in this area of Tipperary in the early 18th Century.

With thanks

Margaret (from NSW Australia)

Hi Margvk.  Yes there is record of headstone in the graveyard in clogher in the parish of Clonoulty  erected by Mary Cummins, in memory of her father Thomas Keough of Clohane.

There is also a headstone  erected by Judith Keough Nodstown, in memory of her husband  John Keough died 1848. and her daughter Mrs Johanns Ryan died 1879.

Another headstone  to Catherine Keough  Nodstown  died 1920.

The Catholic Church records for Holycross parish did not start until 1834,  It is possible they were from Clonoulty, where records started 1805, plus the mention of Nodstown

in the parish of Boherlahan/Dualla where records started in 1809 could help

Best of luck with your research, let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Christina

Wonderful to hear from you and thank you for the information. Are you aware of any online photographs of the 1829 grave of Thomas Keogh?

I have tried to find online information on the Keogh/Keough and Costello families in the Holycross area but am confused at times about the town and parish records, as I have never been to that area. I suspect some places have had name changes. For example, there is a record for a Thomas Kaugh(or Keogh) in the Ireland Diocesan And Prerogative Wills & Administrations Indexes 1595-1858. He died in 1829. It states that he was from Clohane in the district of Waterford, Diocese of Cashel and Emly. I can only find Cloghane which seems to be miles away in Co Kerry. His memorial also says Clohane.

Do you have any more information on Thomas Keogh, died 1829 and buried in the Clogher cemetery ?

Many thanks

Margaret

My grandfather was Lawrence Keogh and lived in clonmel. My mother was born in 1930 and it seems was brought to England by her mother in 1933 without her father who was never seen again after they moved to England. My mother was the youngest of 5 children all have now passed away but I would love to know some more about the Keogh famiy.
