Kenaley

I have been searching for my great 3x grandfather who came from Ireland to Canada sometime in the early 1840's. His son Michael Kennaly was born in Canada April 7th, 1849 who then moved to Chicago, Illinois, USA and then Michigan. I have guessed that maybe his Mother and Father were John Kennealy born in Ireland May 3rd, 1825 married to Mary Dorney  20 Feb 1849 • Kilworth, Waterford and Cork, Ireland. I am having problems finding the connection to make it a fact. I have documentation from immediate family to Michael Kennaly born in canada. Then I hit a brick wall. I have checked passenger lists coming from Liverpool to Canada without success. There are so many different spellings associated with Kennaly that is has made it very difficult to search Irish records. We are hoping to come to Ireland in the Fall of 2026 and visit where my ancestors may have come from but I'm not sure where that is. Any assistance would be appreciated.

This is my great-grandfather:

The John Kennaly and Mary Dorney that you mentioned had children in Co. Waterford in 1853 1858 and 1861 so I would eliminate that marriage. Have you taken a DNA test which could show a general area in Ireland? Most likely the family came from Co. Kerry or Co. Cork based on Griffiths Valuation data. Did you locate the family in the 1861 Canadian census?

A new Mary has popped up. Mary Higgenbotham. Says her father was a Dorney. Several trees are mixing them up.

Also, thank you for your response!

FYI. Right now, I'm the only person actively seeing this message thread. From what I can see, you don't know the name of your 3rd great-grandfather. correct? Did you search the 1861 Canadian census to look for Michael Kenaley? As I indicated in my prior response, Kenaley was most common in Cork and Kerry. Also, a general DNA test might be helpful.

I have looked at the Canadian Census and can't find anything that really matches. Right now everything points to Michael's Father's name being John and his Mother's name being Mary but I really have nothing to confirm that. My DNA doesn't show a particular part of Ireland in which I came from... I know we have Wales and Scottish as well. I have attached the 1851 and 1861 Canadian census'

Looked at my DNA again. It is showing Northern Ireland and Central Scotland. I'm only 7% Irish but my Mom talked about her Irish side as well as her German side of which I have the most DNA. But I have never really been interested in my German side though I can trace it back a lot further than I can my Irish or Scottish.

They have added Leinster, Ireland

I have attached the DNA chart I share with my younger sister and brother. My sister's DNA shows Munster, Ireland
