Kathleen Ryder Workhouse Dublin South

Hi. My grandmother Kathleen Ryder was born at Workhouse Dublin South on 16.06.1923. Her mother's name on her birth extract was also Kathleen Ryder and her father's name left blank. Her mother's address at the time was 316 North Circular Rd. Did that address happen to be a mother and baby home at that time, as my grandmother was subsequently adopted and we are trying to find her biological parents details? Where might I find the records of her admission and discharge from the workhouse, as the National Archives records only go up to 1920 or so. Would the Parish be St James? Thank you in advance, Donna

I checked the 1911 census for the name Ryder and only one entry was returned in that name. Interestingly there is one daughter Edith Kathleen , that is not to say she is the person you seek but it is interesting that her name is similar.

The address at 316 N.C.R. is listed in several directories during the early 1920s as 'Mrs. Mary Ruxburgh', and in several newspaper adverts as a private nursing home - e.g.

Irish Independent 13th August 1924.

'Patients : received previous to and during confinement; terms moderate, Nurse Roxburgh 316 North Circular Road, Dublin'

I've come across several of these nursing homes on the same road, some of my ancestral line were born in another one nearby.

Parish for the SDU would have been St. James for both Catholic and Church of Ireland.

This link says that the records for South Dublin workhouse are held by the National Archives in Dublin. Also that they are searchable on-line. There is normally a 100 year closure period on this type of record so that may account for the 1920 cut-off. However those for 1923 should be open now (assuming they still exist). You may need to get someone to go to the National Archives to look them up.

The address 316, North Circular Road is now Chester House run by the Simon community. It appears to be a hostel type accommodation , I could find no history online. Many of the children born in the Union Workhouse were sent to St. Patricks orphanage on the Navan road but this is now closed to my knowledge and the records were transferred to Tusla https://www.tusla.ie/services/ the child and family services who operate birth information, tracing and adoption services.
