Thank you Gerard. Your help is truly appreciated. Loughnane ,perhaps from Ballibadloe, is ancestral surname. While I have discovered a few Loughnane connections, no direct links to my 2nd great grandmother Anne Loughnane.

Gerard information for Kate Loughnane was helpful. I am stuck on her father Edward Loughnane and his ancestors. Any help is appreciated.
Diana
I don't know if you have seen this attachement.
Regards.
Thank you. I did discover that Srarh Kelly, daughter of Kate Loughnane was orphaned at spent some time at Sisters Of Mercy on Harbour St. then came to USA where she married and raised a family. She is a distant relative. But I just cannot figure the Loughnane connection. I would like to know about Kate Loughnane's father Edward Loughnane , his siblings and his parents. I am lost.
thanks

Hi DIana
I know EXACTLY which family you are referring to. I am probably in contact with a couple of your cousins actually (Sally and Judy)... and sharing this info here in case so people can know where to go to find the info. There was a post in the East Galway Genealogy & DNA Facebook group which discusses this family.... and we have made significant progress with the research. Please check out the post, we are updating it as we find more info.
Sarah AKA Sally Kelly was born in Ballinasloe Galway to Joseph Kelly and Kate Loughane in December 1902. She had a baby brother, Patrick Kelly, who died on the day he was born in 1905.
Sarah's mother, Kate Kelly nee Loughnane died in 1905.
Sally was cared for by family but was in an orphanage for a while too. Her uncle, Patrick Loughnane, arranged for her to be taken out of the orphanage and she was sent to Massachusetts to help her uncle John Loughnane who had been widowed in 1920. It is likely she helped care for the children, cook, clean etc. John Loughnane remarried in 1922/3.. he had returned to Ballinasloe to remarry before heading back to Massachusetts.
Joseph Kelly (Sarah's father), was born to John Kelly and Sarah Pey (Pay, Pey, Pye, Pea). His birth is registered in Galway City in 1883. Joseph Kelly's father, John Kelly, died in 1900 and his civil death registration is in Ballinasloe Galway. Joseph's mother, Sarah Kelly nee Pey, died in 1919, her death registered in Birr Offaly. It appears the Pey/Pay family were from Eglish Offaly, the Kellys were from Ballinasloe but the marriage record for John J Kelly to Sarah Pey in 1878, in Eglish Offaly, show John's father to be a shopkeeper in Athlone.
Kate Loughnane was born to Edward AKA Ned Loughnane and Ellen Carroll. Her civil birth is 1884 Ballinasloe Galway. When Kate was only two years old, her father died. Her mother, Ellen, remarried to Thomas Clancy. Ellen died in 1913 in Ballinasloe Galway.
The 1901 census shows Joseph Kelly living with his uncle, John Pea, his wife Mary and John Pea's sister, Mary. Joseph is correctly recorded as his nephew. The location is Ballindown Birr, Offaly
The 1911 census shows Sarah Kelly (born 1902), as living with her maternal grandmother Ellen Clancy, formerly Loughnane, nee Carroll. I think they were on Piper Lane Ballinasloe.
Out of the 9? Loughnane siblings, I think it was only John who emigrated, the others remained in Ireland. Several died in infancy or early childhood too.
Here are a couple of censuses (1901 and 1911) which show Ellen (widow of Edward Loughnane). You can see Sarah on the 1911. Her age has been recorded incorrectly but the census also records that Ellen cannot read or write, so she may not have known the exact age of little Sarah.
Hope that helps a little. If you would like more info, head over to the FB group I suggested, or have a look on Family Search, where we have uploaded records.
Cheers
