Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
You don't mention the religious denomination but the only Letterkenny church with records back to the 1830s would be the Presbyterian church. The RC and Church of Ireland records start later. I did search for a John White/Whyte baptismal record but did not find a record. No luck with a marriage record also.
I would add John's tory to our XO Chronicles site and maybe someone will recognize the family and comment. https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…
You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.
