John SHEEHAN -son of Patrick, county and parish unknown

My great grandfather, John SHEEHAN was born in Ireland to Patrick SHEEHAN and Mary ?   circa 1851-1855.   His death certificate says his mother was Mary HALEY and he named one son Jame HALEY SHEEHAN, but as this is a secondary source, I use it as a hint, not gospel.

Family lore says Patrick SHEEHAN may have died when John was a baby c. 1851-1856?  and Mary SHEEHAN when he was 12, circa 1863-1868, but one family member thinks it could have been reversed with his mother dying first.  One person also thought she had heard that Patrick died delivering mail or being kicked by a horse.

He emigrated 1867-1870 and is first definitively found in Lawrence, Massachusetts at the time of his first marriage in 1875 when he says he was 24 years old.

There were no known brothers or sisters to John. In the US, John 1st married a Margaret Cosgrove (Cosgriff) whose family can be found on various websites and were from Cloyne, Cork.  (Could he have known them before he emigrated?

A witness at several life events was a David Horrigan (Horgan, etc).   Could he have been a friend from Ireland?

I have run myself ragged for over 40 years trying to find out more about John SHEEHAN's origins.  I have all pertinent info from vitial records, obituaries, and so on, but nothing gives a hint as to whereabout of his birth.

I would appreciate any insight on this problem.

Hello Beverly, I am looking at old queries to see if I can find any info on them. I searched for your Patrick but while I can locate 9 baptisms to a John and Mary the surname of the mother is nevercorrect, (1847 to 1857) the name Sheehan is common in the south of Irleand, mainly Kerry but in other Counties. The name Haley and variants is found in Tipperary but this is not absolute.

I spead the search just a using the surname Haley for the mother and got one hit in Cloyne, a Julia Sheehan born to an Elanor Haley father John Sheehan, the parish is Lisgoold, address Old Court and the diocese of Cloyne, the date is 22nd January 1845, witnesses are John Hickey and Honora Ring.  You can see the parish here and search by event, year and month https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0075 ; Went back to 1835 but no other children found.

The marriage took place in Lisgoold in 1844, 18th February. Witnesses Johanna Haley and Elizabeth Connell. No parents name as per normal.

Surname distribution can seen on this site for free but other searches require a subscription. https://www.johngrenham.com/surnames/

Cork and Kerry church records are on this site for free and you click on church and location, I had a look but did not find the one above or one to suit in Cork but you might spend more time on it, only 3 counties covered in total, other one Dublin. https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ ; Civil records from 1864 are there too.

Good Luck in your searcing

Pat
