JOHN & SARAH HUNTER

Cavan

I have been trying to trace my paternal ancestors (Hunter) & have come to a brick wall. The last info I was able to find, was the info of their immigration to South Africa in the mid 1800s & a death notice of James Hunter.

James & Sarahs 1st son, Samuel, was born on 15 December 1846, County Cavan, Ireland. Their 2nd son, William, was born in 1850 in South Africa, which means they emigrated between 1847 & 1849.

I have no further info about James Hunters parents, John & Sarah Hunter, so I am not able to trace further back. Taking James birth year (1817) into account, I would assume that John Hunter & Sarah (unknown?), would have been born between 1770 & 1800 & probably married in or before 1817. I am also unable to trace whether James Hunter or Ann Cochran(born July 1826) had any siblings.

Any guidance, advice or help with my quest, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Claire,

Just found your post while searching for any information on James Hunter. I'm not 100% sure but I think James may have been some how related to Mary Ann Stone (nee Hunter) whom I found while researching my husbands family tree. There is a Ann Hunter who show's as witness to the baptism of 2 of Mary's children and her marriage to Frederick Stone in 1856 in Georgetown, Uniondale. I also found Mary Hunter listed as a witness to the baptism of James and Anne's daughter in 1855. According to the records she was born in Co Cavan in 1826 so she would've been the same age as Anne. You can find more infomation about her here - http://www.southafricansettlers.com/?p=24420

While researching further on James Hunter, to try establish if there is a family connection, I did find a marriage record transcription on findmypast.ie for a James Hunter to a Anne Coughran in 1846 at Killinkere,Cavan,Ireland. I've checked and Killinkere is right next to Cliffinn. Thought this might be of interest to you in your search. Here is the link https://www.findmypast.ie/transcript?id=R_795153560. ;

Unfortunately I haven't found anything more than that. Hope this information helps your search.

If you do find anything linking Mary Ann to James and what their connection was I'd love to find out if my guess was correct and of course if they are related any information on Sarah and John would also be greatly appreciated.

Regards
