John O'Connell

Hi,  I am looking for some help with my research into my Great Great Grandfather, John O'Connell.

He married Esther Gallup (I believe in the US) and they lived in Pittsfield, New York.

According to his death record, John was born in Ireland on August 28, 1929 (birth year matches his headstone & age

of 83 referenced in his obituary also coincides).

John’s father was listed as Daniel O'Connell and his mother Mary O'Connell on his death record.

I believe he immigrated to the United States prior to 1861 (his first child was born about June 1861 & he

was drafted into the Civil War in August of 1863 with the NY 76th Regiment).

In his daughter's obituary (Lydia O'Connell Benjamin), it states that she is a direct descendant of Daniel O'Connell,

the Irish patriot (do not know if this is true).

Based on my Dad's and my DNA, we're connected to West Iveragh Peninsula, Iveragh Peninsula & South West Munster.

I would like to find out where John O'Connell was born in Ireland, his birth record, were is

parents Daniel & Mary O'Connell, if he had a siblings & when he came over to the US.

I've attached pictures of John O'Connell's death record, his obituary, his grave & Lydia O'Connell Benjamin's

obituary for reference.

Thank you. I really appreciate any information that could be provided!

Daniel O'Connell, the Irish patriot, had a son John but he did not emigrate https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_O%27Connell_(MP)

I searched the free site irishgenealogy.ie  which has church records for Co. Kerry. I searched from 1828-1830 and there were no John Connell/O'Connell baptismal records with father Daniel and mother Mary.

I also searched the subscription Roots Ireland with the same results. There were two 1826 records, one in Castleisland and the other near Dingle for a John with parents Daniel and Mary.

Any suggestions where I should look next to find out more information about John O'Connell's birth in Ireland?

Thank you Roger!

First, don't assume that he was born in 1829 and in the month of August. Many immigrants changed their year of birth (and sometimes day and month) when they arrived in their new country. Just because the date is shown on the headstone does not guarantee the date is correct.

Second, there is the possibility that the church/chapel where he was baptized does not have records back to 1829 or earlier.

The best record I located on the free site irishgenealogy.ie is as follows:

John Connell baptized August 18 1826 at Castleisland with parents Daniel Connell and Mary Houlihan

Another suggestion is to contact DNA matches who have possible O'Connell connections and see if you can establish a connection. Very possible that John had siblings who also emigrated to America.
