Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked Roots Ireland and only found the three children you mentioned in the Castlegar records: Ellen 1843, John 1849 and Catherine 1853. I did find the February 1842 marriage record in Castlegar. John was from Sheroon which was also the address on the baptismal records. I'm not sure where exactly Sheroon is although Castegar RC parish is near Galway city. I looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for Rahoon and St. Nicholas parishes. There were a total of four John Murphys listed.

Hi Roger McDonnell,

Thank you for your insights, they align with my own in most respects. I believe the St.Nicholas parish is most likely my line in respect to the family story (and birth records) showing Castlegar. Seems St.Nicholas parish more encompassing of Castlegar parish than Rahoon.

Hmmm Yes Sheroon, Sherdon or Sheroom has me a little confused,  I had wondered if the address of the birth may have been a room called the "sheroom" at a local midwifes residence or somesuch quaint notion.

hahaha "genealogy...what a ride". Spelling differences may also suggest Sheron or similar...ah well, time yet.

Thank you very much for your time and interest in my search it is very gratifyinf to have some comfirmation from a fresh resource. If interested...or if my line may aid you in researching your own family, please feel free to peruse my family tree. I have just migrated my tree to Ancestry.com and am a little vague on functions/settings but...it should be readable to you.

Be aware, it is a work in progress and I know there are some likely mistakes that I choose to leave there, for now, to keep in plain view...usually with a "?" mark to show doubt.

I do have some further info in Ellen and Catherine in regard to migrating to nZ and their lives here. However I think John and his mother Bridget stayed in Ireland and that John senior died...but...as I say "what a ride"

I sought info from 1901 and 1911 cencus and found a Bridget Murphy (mother) and Jonathon and a Mary siblings but still need to find more evidence.

Very warmest regards to you.

I have compiled a tree branch in GENI based on Patrick Codum (abt. 1841). For each family member, I have attached the record sources as much as I could including census, birth, and marriage records.

email me at glenpoland@yahoo.com if you would like a GEDCOM file of this branch.
