John McCann born in Ireland, emigrated to Scotland

John McCann was born in Ireland in 1773, married Margaret Laviery, b. 1794 in Ireland. They emigrated to Scotland sometime before the birth of their son John in 1814 in Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland. Their son Hugh was born in 1812, but not sure if that was in Ireland or Scotland. According to census records, John Sr. was a shoemaker in Lanark in 1841. All of the information I have is from Scotland's People. I have not been able to find where John and Margaret emigrated from in Ireland. Grateful for any information you can provide.

You can use this site to see where the names were most common in Ireland in the mid 1800s.

Not surprisingly both are most common in the counties of Ulster. I say that because huge numbers of workers from the counties of Ulster headed for Scotland and that area of Ireland is consequently the most common origin for Scots of Irish descent.

Your problem is that few Irish parishes have records for the 1700s and tracing the families will be challenging.

Possibly DNA testing may be a way of matching with others who have additional information about where the family originate. Family Tree DNA reportedly has more people with Ulster roots than any other company. That obviously increases the chances of finding a match. You might want to try them or, if you have already tested, you can transfer your results to them for no fee.

The North of Ireland Family History Society is running an Ulster DNA project in conjunction with FTDNA and can offer testing kits at a reduced price.  http://www.nifhs.org (Go to DNA project on the website).
