John Langan and Mary (McCue - McHugh) Langan

I am seeking information on the following people.  John Langan and Mary R. (McCue or McHugh) Langan.  I am led to believe both come from County Mayo, Ireland.  I hold the following information. 

John Langan was born in Ireland @ the 1829-1830 time frame.  I pick him up in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census in Conemaugh, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, USA.  He is listed as 31 years old and born in Ireland.  He has 5 children oldest is age 10, thus I put his marriage to Mary in 1850 or earlier.

Mary R. (McCue / McHugh) was born in Ireland @ the 1827 time frame.  Like John the 1860 U.S. Federal Census has her in Conemaugh, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, USA.  She is listed as 33 years old and born in Ireland.  The web site: Find A Grave shows she was born in County Mayo, Ireland. 

The 1860 U.S. Federal Census shows that John and Mary’s two oldest children were born in England. But subsequent Census shows they were born in Pennsylvania, USA.  Thus, it is possible John and Mary Married in Ireland, went to England had two children and then came to the U.S. Based on the children’s ages of ten and eight. Or that John and Mary came to the U.S. on a vessel from England and the Census transcriber made a mistake.  I again conclude a marriage date of around 1849 – 1850. 

Any information on John or Mary you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a marriage record in Co. Mayo for John Langan and Mary McCue/McHugh. So either the marriage was in a Mayo parish that does not have records back to 1850 or maybe they married in England.

I also looked for baptismal records for John Langan and there are records in 1825 1828 two in 1830. Without knowing john's parents names, we can't determine if any of these records were for your John and it is also likely that he was baptized in a parish that does not have reocrds back to 1829. Same situation for Mary McHugh.

You may already be aware of them, but there are records for what may be your John Langan and Mary McHugh in the Famly Search database [https://www.familysearch.org]. The records showw them both as having been borrn in Ireland in the relevant time period, and also show a daughter, Margaret, born in Pennsylvania in 1865.  If you create a (free) account there, you can find John under ID umber LB7X-9CG, and can access the records for the others easily through his record, as you will see.  The site automatically locates other potentially relevant records, and right now is offering an 1880 census record for what appears to be the same family, with two other daughters as well, Amey and Elesibeth (sic).  In each record, you can see the screen names of those who have created or modified the record, and can send them private messages, so you might be able to get more info by contacting them (and perhaps also locate some relatives that way).

Those records do not refer specificlaly to County Mayo, but both surnames are from the area.  According to MacLysaght's Surnames of Ireland, the Mac Hugh surname is found mostly in Mayo and Sligo, as an anglicization of the Irish name Mac Aodha.  Surnames such as Mac Hugo, Hughes, and even Hayes originated elsewhere, either from the same Irish surname, Mac Aodha, or else from another surname, Ó hAodha.  Similarly, MacLysaght says that the surname Langan is an anglicization of the Irish surname Ó Longáin, which was originally found in a few other places as well, but became  a peculiarly Mayo name over time.
