Hi Forde researchers.
As you will have all discovered, there are many many Ford(e)s of County Galway, and of Annaghdown, and of course the names repeat across and down the generations, and lineage is further complicated with Ford(e)s marrying Ford(e)s. It is quite a mission to clarify what Forde line we are each exploring, and establishing the townland is therefore very important.
The John Forde that AM Dunnage is researching (opening post, above) appears to be the son of Michael and Catherine (nee Forde) Forde of Lisheenanoran. Michael's wife Catherine is understood (DNA matches) to have been the daughter of Michael and Mary (formerly Murphy, nee Burke) Forde of Annagh West, the Forde family that Maria outlines above. Sooo...the John referred to in Maria's post above is NOT the John Forde queried about in the original AM Dunnage query, although they each have the same G-G GF (Michael Forde 1700s).
Maria's John Ford/e is John Burke Ford/e, understood from Annaghdown baptismal records to be the 5th of ten children to Michael and Mary (Murphy, nee Burke) Forde of Annagh West. As Maria says, John Burke Forde and his brother James Burke Forde (my G-GF) came to Southland (James Burke Forde in 1863). Five children of this family appear to have died in childhood/in the Great Hunger, and three remained living in Annagh West.Today there are still Fordes on the home farm, Park House, built 1838 at Annagh West.
Returning now to AM Dunnage's John Forde, son of Michael and Catherine (nee Forde) Forde of Lisheenanoran, along with Julia (Mrs Thomas Crowe), there were seven other known siblings. Patrick and Bridget remained in Ireland. Patrick married Honor Devany, lived in Annagh,. Bridget married Thomas Forde of Balrobuckbeg (son of Dermot(Darby) and Mary (Kelly) Forde. James, Michael, Cecilia, Mary.and Norah came to Southland.
Always keen to learn more so appreciate the connection with other Forde researchers. Thanks for posting,
