John Fitzgerald

I am trying to find information on my 3rd gr. grandfather, John Baptiste Fitzgerald.  On one document I find he was born in Cork, Ireland.  We estimate he was born abt. 1770.  He came to Canada around 1812-1814.  I believe he might have landed in Halifax, Nova Scotia then met and married Rose Suzanne Robichaud.  He supposedly came over with his brothers which makes me think the time frame was military related.  No other Fitzgerald is listed anywhere near him on any census in canada after this time so who they were I have no clue.  They were not part of any of his childrens baptisms so I think they were seperated.  I also have been told but not proven they were from St. Peter's/Paul Parish.

I just do not know where to look or start.  This has been so frustrating as I do not know the exact parish name but 1770 I do not know if there are any records.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

why don't you take a look on emmigration boats away from canada back to England, as the brothers may well have gone to England, another alternative and what some of my Fitzgerialds did, they moved south to NY, as Canada was too harsh, why not take a look at US immigration records.  I wish you luck though, as Fitzgerald is such a prolific name.  My fitzgeralds came from Mallow in Cork.  I wouldn't assume military either, as there were a lot of rebels who ran away from Ireland because they were a bit naughty and would have been imprisoned or worse if caught.

Hi Lisa,

I am also trying also to locate my 3rd ggrandad John Fitzgerald who I have identified / is shown on Ancestry as married to Rose Robichaud.

I linked to him after researching my gggrandad Austin Fitzgerald and also taking an Ancestry DNA test. I have several DNA matches to people (who have also taken a DNA test) who descend from the same family..and direct DNA matches to what looks like a brother called Jacques Fitzgerald. There are also DNA matches across the Robichaud line further back from Rose.

It is bizarre as my gggrandad was born in Ireland (Mayo) to my knowledge....the dates don't really add up either. It looks like he had Austin before moving to Canada so I am wondering if he had a child in Ireland before moving to Canada.

The DNA hits however are pretty strong evidence that it is him and numerous links to the Robichaud's makes me wonder...so who knows.

I just wondered if you knew anything about him from your research ?

Regards!

Jon, We are doing research into John Fitzgerald as well, trying to find his parents. In your response above you mention Austin as John's father but then you state that John may have had Austin before moving to Canada. If John is your 3rd ggrandad and Austin is your gggrandad, this is very confusing. Who exactly would this Austin be? We are trying to research my family tree and John Fitzgerald is as far back as we could find. Cheers.

Jean Baptiste

Hi Jean,

John is the 3rd great grandad and Austin was his son, my second great grandad.

Not sure if you will receive this reply but please let me know how your research is going :)

Regards

Jon
