John Drought retired in 1856

I have recently tracked this man, my 3rd Great Grandfather seemingly ending his world travels by retiring to Tullamore. I have a lot of detail about his descendants, 5 children spread around Dublin and England. He may have died there in 1865.

I recently visited Tullamor, Birr and Ballyboy hoping to find a way to link to his predecessors, who likely sprang from this region during the 1600's.

Can anyone nudge me in te direction of more information please, I would love to visit again, this time with more purpose.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Tullamore is in Kilbride civil parish. I looked at the 1828 Tithe listings for the parish and there was a John Drought in Spollinstown townland. Not sure if this is your John or not. The surname Drought appeared to be very common in Co. Offaly at that time.

The 1853 Griffiths Valuation head of household for Kilbride civil parish shows John Drought in Bury Quay in Tullamore.

As you indicated there is an 1865 death index record for an 81 year old John Drought in Tullamore. You can get a copy of the record from the General Register Office or wait until the images are placed on line probably next year. Currently death record images are available at www.irishgenealogy.ie from 1877-1965.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

Hi Roger (I think your fingers might have slipped typing your name, excuse me if not)

Thank you for that very helpful and rapid reply. I am sure he is not the guy in Spollinstown as he was in Norwich having children at that time. He was a saddler with various regiments, returning to Dublin around 1832 and then retiring, transferring his pension to Tullamore in either 1851 or 56 - hard to read the document. It should now be easier to check on him with this detail.

The real challenge we face is finding his parents from the many Droughts which, like you we found around Tullamore. I think I have the beginnings of the line around Ballyboy and did manage to visit the village & Churchyard this summer (Sadly the pub was shut!!!) If I am right his father was a Captain Lawrence (Lowry) Drought married to Jane Strickett in Ossory in 1782.

I have read of a "place" called Droughtville, which shows up on sat navs and maps, but when we drove by it looks like it is just a gate post. Perhaps I have stumbled uopn the Irish Brigadoon, which would explain a lot ?

My third great grandfather was John Drought, who came to the USA with his wife Margaret Claxton Drought in 1820. Would love to find his family.

drought - I am certain that your John is not the same. He was probably in Brighton UK at the time, as a saddler in the 8th Dragoons.

Good luck in your search
