John Barry Murphy of Coolmucky

Looking for information on my fathers family. He was the son of John Barry Murphy and Hannah Desmond. They lived on a farm at Coolmucky. There were 8 children, 4 of whom came to Australia. The eldest, Noel stayed on the farm. 2 daughters went to England and 1 married locally and emigrated to Canada.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You did not provide approximate year of birth for your father or when he left Ireland but I'm wondering if the two census records below are for his mother. There were about four Murphy families in Coolmucky including one headed by a John Barry.

Thanks Roger, I don't think these are related, the other names are wrong. My understanding is that my father, Denis DOB 13.010.1925, left Ireland at age 16 to work in England. He was in Birmingham for sometime and spent some toime in London as I found a record of him taking passage to Autralia in 1948.  The 'Ranchi' left London 17.06.1948 and he arrived in Melbourne late July 1948. He passed away 12.02.1986 in Melbourne.

We always wrote our surname as Barry-Murphy , and I see that was how Denis named himself on the 'Ranchi' record, but looking at the Irish census 1901 and 1911, I can only see Barry Murphy being christian and surname of his grandfather. Also his father has John Barry as christian/forenames and Murphy as surname. Dad's mother was Hannah Desmond but I have no dates ar any other information about her. John Barry was the oldest of 3 cildren. His sisters were Agnes and Mary (altough I thought it was May) and there was some talk about John Barry being in the IRA and Agnes (I think married an English soldier so the girls moved to England.

The above information is all from memory Dad speaking about his family many years ago.

I located the 1917 civil marriage record for John Barry Murphy and Hannah Desmond. They were married in St. Patrick's church in Cork city. They both lived in Crookstown which is six miles east of Macroom. The images for civil birth records are not available past 1915. You will have to sign-in to see the record.

Roger, Thank you very much for posting this!

These are my great grandparents. Their daughter Marie (Barry-Murphy) married Jeremiah (Jerry) Dineen and moved to Canada, settling in Oakville, near Toronto. Michael, their eldest son is my father.

Amanda, Pearl is on my grandparents' marriage certificate. I'll e-mail you a copy.

Regards,
