John and Mary Donovan

John Donovan is my Great Great Great Grand-Father (on my mother's side of my family)

It's quite a leap across the pond from Canada back to Ireland and I'm having a challenging time trying to find evidence in Ireland of their their parents, their birth,  marriage  Then in addition I'm trying to find information about the birth of their children.  This is what I have so far. John and Mary (nee Cosgrove or Cosgriff) Donovan were married (Roman Catholic) in Ireland and their fivechildren were all born in Ireland.

1842 - Emmigrated to Canada. (Source: Yr of Immigration as listed by their son,  Dennis Donovan in Census of Canada, 1901 and 1911.

1851 Census of Canada - They reside in Lees County, Upper Canada: John, born about 1797, County Limerick; wife Mary Cosgrove or Cosgriff, born about 1792, Ireland; and their children (Thomas born about 1825,  County Limerick; Dennis about 17 May 1827, County Cork; Michael born about 1831, Ireland; Patrick born 25 March 1835, Limerick, Ireland; and finally Margaret born about 1837,Ireland.

We think they came from Galbally but are not 100% sure of course. We do have one link to Galbally. That is their son Thomas Donovan married Margaret Flynn (born  March 1832,County Limerick, Ireland) and she was christened 14 May 1832, Galbally, County Limerick, Ireland

Thanking you in advance for any assistance!

Hi Ray,

I attach some detail which may be of interest to you.

The name "Coskeran" according to MacLysaght comes fromm the name "Cuskeran" and is associated with County Down!

Thomas Coskeran is shown in the Tithe Records for County Limerick in 1830.

There is a Mary shown in 1821 and two other baptisms for this couple.

Dear McCoy,

Thank you so much for taking the time to research and find this interesting information.   I do have a few questions.

1. You mentionned that " There is a Mary shown in 1821 and two other baptisms for this couple."

Would you be able to reply with a .pdf of those records?

2. Would you have any idea how or if the surname Coskeran could have morphed into Cosgrove or Cosgriff on arrival in Canada.

On the Canadian 1861 marriage record of their son Patrick Donovan, his Mother's Name is listed as Mary Cosgrove.

Name:Patrick Donovan

Event Type:MarriageEvent Date:12 Feb 1861      Event Place:Canada West, British Colonial America      Leeds and Grenville, Ontario

Gender:Male   Age:23     Birth Year (Estimated):1838  Birthplace:Limerick, Ireland

Father's Name:John Donovan    Mother's Name: Mary Cosgrove

Unfortunately I've searched all the Irish Censuses (http://census.nationalarchives.ie/ 1821 to 1841) and couldn't find a record of a John Donovan, born about 1797, County Limerick; wife Mary (nee Cosgrove or Cosgriff), born about 1792 and there children that would put them in a county / parish in Ireland.

Hi Ray,

I attach baptism records for children of John Donovan and Mary Coskeran - 1821 - 1834.

A John Coskeran married a Julia Coleman in 1822 and a Thomas Coskeran married an Anastasia O'Donnell in 1826. There were probable brothers to Mary Coskeran.

Thomas Coskeran appears to have died in 1865, agerd 80 years - Civil Records per www.rootsireland.ie

Dear McCoy,

Again I must thank you so much for you're assistance in finding and providing me with these documents. It is so much more than I ever imagined  with I first replied to Ireland Reaching Out. The given names of the Donovan children would appear to match up. I'm convinced now that my next trip is to Limerick County, Ireland

How Mary Coskeran's surname morphed into Cosgrove or Cosgriff on arrival in Canada is still a mystery.

Ray

p.s.  If you ever get a chance to visit Canada you must visit Leeds County, Ontario, Canada where I grew up. You'll find towns and villages named Ballycanoe, New Dublin, Trevelyan and Selton to name a few.

The copies of Baptism records above were great because the transcript listed the Sponsors which is so useful

Ray,

Subscription Site www.rootsireland.ie has a transcription of Margaret's baptism.

Parents recorded as John Donovan and Mary Corcoran.

Baptismal Sponsors: Thomas Corcoran and JNA(Johanna) Corcoran

Many surnames have changed, due to incorrect pronunciation. Often times the priest was not

aware of the correct surname

I am unable to Post this transcription through this Site.

A copy of the parish records attached - Right hand Page
