John and Catharine Loughnane

I am searching for information on my great-great grandparents, John (1808-1894) and Catharine (Darcy)(1820-1906) Loughnane.

John and Catharine emigrated in 1852, with two of their three children, James (c.1848-unknown) and Margaret (1851-1939). Mary, their oldest, was said to have stayed behind to help care for a sick grandmother, and emigrated at a later date with an aunt.

The family landed in New York on 12 Feb 1852.  The ship they were on board, the West Point, (according to family legend) had departed Liverpool, England, bound for Boston, but ended up landing in New York.

John and Catharine had another child, Patrick, while still in New York state, Catharine was most likely pregnant during their journey.  They moved on to Guernsey County, Ohio, where many of their descendants still live today.  Their family eventually consisted of a total of eleven children.

I have no information for John and Catharine's life in Ireland except for the fact that John was born in County Tipperary, and they are said to have been married on 19 Jun 1843 at St. Ruadhan's in Lorrha and Dorrha.  I believe John's birthdate was 24 Jun 1808.  His death record here in the United States lists his mother as Mary Madden.

Any information concerning John and Catharine and their family there in Ireland would be greatly appreciated!

The two links below contain the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for Lorrha and Dorrha civil parishes in North Tipperary. Lorrha parish has Loughnanes listed but no John. There were four James Loughnanes listed (in reality maybe just two because there may be duplicates). I'm wondering if James was the father of John since the oldest son of James and Catharine was James. There were no Loughnane records in Dorrha. There were Maddens in both parishes. Let me know if you have questions.

Thanks for the info. It is very frustrating, because their surname is found spelled in a variety of ways: Loughnane, Loughmane, Loughman, Loughnan, etc.
John and Catherine's children in birth order were:
Mary
James
Margaret
Patrick H.
Ann C.(Catherine?)
Thomas Gerald
John Francis
Alexander
Joseph B.
Robert Michael
Dennis.

I don't know if any of those names help or not...

The pay site www.roootsireland.ie has the following records that seem to mactch the Loughnane family you are interested in.

Marriage for a John Loughnane and Catherine Darcy in Lorrha R.C. parish in 1843

Baptisms for children of John Loughnane and Catherine Darcy

James Loughnane 1846

Thomas Loughnane 1848

Mary 1851

all in Terryglass R.C. parish

I checked the indexes only- there is a fee to see the records - around 4euros per record. getting abirth record may show a specific townland - there may not be much information on the marriage record as churhc records of the time  often just gave names of the couple and witnesses.

I didn't find any possible baptism  for John Loughnane but many of the parish records inthat are do not start until the late 1820' and 30's.

Hop this is of some help
