Johanna Power Waterford
Hi everyone! I’m trying to find out more about my ancestor Johanna Power, born somewhere in Waterford in the 1840s. She was Catholic, and she seems to have had quite an adventurous life.
I believe I’ve found her baptism — a Johanna Power, daughter of Gulielmus (William) Power and Ellen — which fits really well with her later life.
I may also have found her working as a governess in Monmouthshire, Wales, which matches her age and birthplace. My current theory is that she met British soldier Edwin Ware while he was stationed in Wales or Ireland, then returned to Ireland with the regiment.
Johanna and Edwin married in Athlone Garrison, and soon after she travelled with him to Bengal, India, where their son Richard Henry Ware was born.
I’ve noticed that a few Power women did marry British soldiers in Athlone, so I’m wondering if Johanna might be connected to one of those families.
What I know so far:
• Born: Waterford, c.1840s
• Parents: William (Gulielmus) Power and Ellen
• Religion: Catholic
• Possibly working as a governess in Wales
• Married: Athlone Garrison to soldier Edwin Ware
• Lived: Bengal for several years
• Child: Richard Henry Ware
• Later life: May have remarried after Edwin’s death
What I’m hoping to find:
• Confirmation that the baptism record is the right Johanna
• Any siblings of Johanna born to William and Ellen
• Any Power families with daughters who married soldiers in Athlone
• Her exact townland or address in Waterford
Any help or local knowledge would be hugely appreciated. Thanks so much.
