Jeremiah/Darby Fox

Hi there looking for help tracing the origins in Ireland of my ancestors. We've tried all the Irish sites but there seems to be no record of them in Ireland before they appear on the 1851 census in Scotland. My GFx4 died in 1888 in Scotland so we estimate he was born roughly 1815 in Ireland. He used the name Darby or Derby but on his oldest sons wedding certificate in Scotland he used the name Jeremiah which I know is interchangeable. He arrived in Scotland with his wife Mary Parks ( no information on her either) and their 2 daughters Catherine and Mary and also no information on them both either. We've traced all their paperwork in Scotland as in marriage certificates for the girls and all their death certificates but we know absolutely nothing regarding their origins. Thank you for reading. Sorry forgot to add they were Catholic. Thanks

Just so you know, the name Fox in Ireland is also (Mc) Shanaghy. I traced an individual named Fox and found some of the records called her Shanaghy.

I didn't know that thank you so much. We did try all the different variations of Fox but there was still nothing. Thank you

elizabeth

There are a number of family trees posted on Ancestry. This one gives the surname of Darby's mother.

Hi Patricia yes thank you we've got all those details as we know all about them once they landed here in Scotland from 1851 onwards but on all the paperwork it just states Ireland and nothing more. We've been trying for so so long to find out whereabouts in Ireland they came from. Thanks Elizabeth

If you have not seen Jer'h's death record, you can view it on Scotland's People. It says his father was Patrick, his mother Sarah Cullen, and both were deceased.  (I tried to attach it here with no luck.)

glanvil3@aol.com

Yes I've got a copy of that I even managed to track down his grave even though there is no marker and no one else in the family even knew that he came over from Ireland. It seems we are a family of little information 😂

Hi Elizabeth,

It's possible Darby and Mary and their older children were baptized in parishes for which there is no register available.  But did you try the free site irishgenealogy.ie to see if they were baptized in Cork, Kerry, or Dublin?

Also, have you looked at the Tithe Applotment Books https://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp?

Maybe you could find the fathers of Darby and Mary listed there--or even Darby.

Hi Patricia

I did look at the Tithe app book and there's was a Darby Fox but he would only have been about 12? I thought that it named the householder? Maybe I have been mistaken

Elizabeth

You are right, Elizabeth. But some of the Tithe records are for the 1830s, so Darby would have been in his 20s then.  His father was Patrick Fox, so maybe you can find a Patrick Fox in those records.

Elizabeth,

You probably already have seen. There is a tree on Ancestry suggesting Darby married an Honor Waters in Galway prior to marrying Mary Parks. Other than the marriage record below there isn't any supporting documentation.

Hi Elizabeth, just in case you haven't done this--you probably have, as you've done a lot of work--then perhaps research everyone living in the Fox household, not just the parents and children. For instance, Lachlan Fox is likely a relative so researching him might lead to your Foxes.

glanvil3@aol.com

MaryT we know they had 2 daughters Catherine and Mary and all their paperwork says Mary is their mother?  What we can find is they arrived with 2 daughters and maybe 1 son Patrick that died in Glasgow at a year old. So unsure if he was born in Ireland or Scotland.

elizabeth

Patricia Lachlan Fox has only shown up once for us as a lodger then we can't find anything else.

elizabeth

Elizabeth,

Honor and daughter were prior. They might have died before Darby married Mary Parks.

Just a thought. Might not have any connection.

I'll look into this its just mind blowing 🤯  in 1851 on the census it states the daughter Mary is 10 and Darbys wife Mary is only 20! I know their ages are all over the place so it would make sense that another woman is their Mother and he's remarried. We just seem to keep going round in circles.
