Jeremiah Hogan from Cloughjordan

While searching infindmypast I found a Petty Sessions Court Register Transcription as follows:

"No. 200 7th May 1880:

Complainant: Con(stable?) John O'Connell of Nenagh

Defendant: Jeremiah Hogan of Cloughjordan

Cause of Complaint: Defendant on the 24th day of April 1880 did expose for show and hire an entire Horse on the public street of the Town of Nenagh said street not being lawfully approved(?) for that purpose.

Particulars of Order: Fined ten shillings and Costs one shilling."

I would dearly love to find out more about this incident as I believe the defendant to be my g-g-grandfather. Can anyone tell me where I can get further particulars about this case, or explain what "expose for show and hire an entire horse" meant? Why was it unlawful?

All help will be gratefully received.

Hello Julie

https://www.nationalarchives.ie/legal-records/guide/

Above is link to the National Archives of Ireland where these Court records are held.  I have looked at the site and cannot see the answer to your question re Jeremiah. However there is a section on the site where you can contact them for further information and they may be able to help you.

In the meantime I am giving an educated "guess" as to what he was fined for.  There would have been specific areas in each town where fairs were held in order for people to sell farm animals and crops etc.  There would also have

Mspecific days when this could happen called Fair Days.  It looks like he was trying to sell his horse on a street not designated for this purpose and also not the correct day.

Wishing you success with your query.

Hi Julie

In my records have a Jeremiah Hogan born 1856, died 1908 in Parkside, South Australia.  Would this be your g-g-grandfather?
