James Shane and Mary Carr

Sometime between 1842 and 1845 my three times great grand father James Shane, his wife Mary Carr and 10 of their children immigrated from Ireland to Canada. They settled in L.A. Ontario (later to be known as Camden Ontario). It is thought that they boarded a ship in Belfast, but I have no records of that.

I am looking for any history on the family, where they had lived and if there are any surviving relatives of the family in Ireland.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

More than likely the surname was mcShane and they likely lived in one of the counties in Ulster province. Co. Armagh had the most McShanes in the mid-19th century.

I checked on Roots Ireland from 1830-1840 for all of Ireland for baptismal records for Shane/McShane children with a father James and a mother with the surname Carr and got no record. Possibly the church where the baptisms occurred no longer has records back to that time period.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing. Perhaps you will match someone who has more info on your Shan/McShane family.

My ancestors were James Shane and Mary Carr.  When they arrived in Canada they settled in southeastern Ontario, Camden Township, Lennox and Addington County.  I have the near complete ancestry tree from the time they arrived here.  My maiden name was Shane.  Would love to learn more details about them prior to arriving to Canada.

If you can give me some dates on when James and Mary married and if you know when they were born, I will see if Roots Ireland has any records.

I would love to see your family tree, I must be in it some where :)

James Shane was my 3 times great grand father, his  5th child Andrew was my 2 times great grand father, Andrew’s son Andrew was my great grand father and Andrew’s 2nd born child Mary was my grand mother. Mary Shane married William Monckton and had 4 children, the youngest child Mary is my mother. My Mother married Bernie Rodych in 1955 and had 5 children of which i am the youngest.

I have always been told that Andrew senior’s wife Catherine died in child birth and his son Andrew was raised by the Clancy family. We believe that Andrew senior went west following the gold rush to California, our family never knew what became of him. Does any of this sound accurate to you?

I was in Ireland 4 years ago and did a little research, but unfortunately found nothing of any importance. I did acquire the Mc Shane family coat of arms, which i assume is accurate.

If you would share your family tree with me, my email is  karen.rodychroberts@gmail.com

Hello Rodych-Roberts et al.,

Yes, I am a descendant of James Shane and wife Mary Carr.

I descend directly through son Peter Shane 24 May 1825-4 Feb 1904 and his wife Mary Lawrence Abt 1830-29 Aug 1914.

In fact I know Mary Lawrence Shane was born in County Wicklow, Leinster, Ireland and died at Oshawa, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada and is buried with Peter Shane in Camden East Anglican Cemetery, Camden East, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario, Canada.

I have in my possession a 4 generational photo taken in summer of 1914 that features my maternal grandfather and also Mary Lawrence Shane! I have been to St. Luke's Anglican Cemetery in Lennox and Addington County myself and have photographed many "Shane and Lawrence" memorial stones belonging to descendants of James Shane and Mary Carr!

While I have yet to confirmn the burial locations for James Shane and Mary Carr/Kerr I do have and am posting a link to Peter Shane and Mary Lawrence here for "IrelandXO" to review and am hoping to link up with some of my Irish family members!

Hello to all again on this thread and also to Barbara "Barb" Shane Kelly,

Like Barbara Kelly, I have done extensive research on descendants of James Shane and Mary Carr/Kerr.

I know this James Shane lived in Dublin because I am directly related through his son Peter Shane and wife Mary Lawrence who are buried in St. Luke's Anglican Church located in Camden East Village, Stone Mills, Lennox and Addington, Ontario, Canada. I also know Mary Lawrence was born in Wicklow, Ireland, the daughter of Simon Lawrence and Mary Holmes that are also buried in St. Luke’s.

I would really like to get in touch with Barbara Kelly because I share DNA with her!
