James Quin/Susan O'Neill

I am looking for family members of James Quin born about 1820/21 and Susan/Susannah O'Neill born about 1824. They were married in County Tyrone in 1844. Witnesses were Terrence O'Neill & Charles O'Neill. I do not know their relationship. There is a brother, John O'Neill in 1870 USA census with James & Susan. I do not know when they left Ireland to go to USA, but all their children were born in USA after 1848. I found baptism record of Susanna, 24 July 1824, parish Confeacle, Tyrone with father's name Carolo O'Neill & mother Anna Haroran. I found baptism for James, 5 April 1821, parish Clonfeacle Diocese, Armagh County with father's name James Quin & mother Mary McCoy. Could you provide me more family members with this information? Thank you, Peggy

Peggy,

Unfortunately the names Quin(n) and O’Neill are very common in the Clonfeacle area. Without a townland for them I can’t think of an easy way of identifying these families from all the others of the same names. (By way of example, there were 127 people named James Quin/Quinn in Tyrone in the 1901 census. That’s how common that name is).

Possibly DNA testing may be a way of matching with others who have additional information about where the family originate. Family Tree DNA reportedly has more people with Ulster roots than any other company. That obviously increases the chances of finding a match. You might want to try them or, if you have already tested, you can transfer your results to them for no fee.

The North of Ireland Family History Society is running an Ulster DNA project and can offer FTDNA testing kits at a reduced price.  http://www.nifhs.org (Go to DNA project on the website). You don’t need to be a member of the NIFHS to participate in the DNA project.
