Madge, I am looking at old queries and there are a few James Gould etc born around that time, at least 3 (Variant spellings and i discounted Gold) two in Cork and one in Wicklow all RC and on in Derry spelled Coald so unlikely and a Presbyterian.
While I found these ones a lot of parishes will not have records at that time so we may miss him anyway, also without a parent name we are at a complete loss.
If you look at this site you can see surname distribution in Ireland at various times, https://www.johngrenham.com/surnames/ Search is free but rest is subscripton.
The origin of the name is apparently viking for the 10th century.
Regards
Pat
