Additional information that I have

I have an original letter written to Mary on 18th October 1898.

Mary was married with several children and living in Winchester N. Z. at this time.    This letter was written to her by her former Mistress in Urlingford, Ireland and mentions Mary’s” brother doing well in America.”

I have a photograph of James Coughlan at the age of 21 years – in  my great grandmother’s collection.

I have two original paper cuttings of Jim Coughlan being injured in an accident at the Mohawk Mine, Goldfield, Nevada, USA and also his funeral a few days later.  These were sent out to my Great grandmother from the US and kept with his photo.

I have his Death Certificate (kindly located for me by kind researchers across the other side of the world a few months ago.) – stating he died on 7th October 1913 at St Mary’s Hospital in the City of Goldfield, Nevada.

I have a Funeral Record and Ledger record that states:

Additional information- Mary Haar, Winchester, Canterbury, New Zealand, sister of deceased.  (Source – Family search collection – Nevada County Birth & Death Records 1871-1992)

So I have proved the connection between James and Mary but I cannot find any record of his birth.

I am 100% confident that he was born in Ireland.

I have not found any record of his parents’ deaths or burials or any information about his grandparents.

Any little bit of information would be so much appreciated.

Anne,

I looked for a baptism record for James Coughlan and/or other siblings other than the ones you mentioned above, but found none. The death record and funeral ledger show he died on August 7, 1913, you wrote October 7th...not a big deal, but it shows he was married, and that his body was shipped to Los Angeles, CA. That shipment struck me as odd for that era for someone who worked for the railroad at a mine. Why not just be buried in Nevada? I looked at the 1900 and 1910 census records for him in Nevada, but found nothing. Additionally, the name on the death certificate is Joseph J. Coughlin - I am sure you noted that.

Your family photos and correspondence hold more weight than records you cannot locate.

Regards,

Carolyn

HI Carolyn, Thank you for your response.

I think you may be looking at a different James Coughlan.  I will try and upload a copy of the Burial Record which confirms what I outlined earlier.   I do appreciate your feedback so looking forward to seeing if you can shed any more light on this.

I haven't been able to find him in any Census records even though I know that he was in the US in November 1898.  Perhaps I have been looking in the wrong areas.

I have added the file so hope it works.

Kind regards

Anne

Hi Anne,

Thanks for the image...I stand corrected! I saw the one I mentioned on Ancestry. Your ledger makes more sense for your James. It is hard to find single people in US census records I have found for they could have moved around a lot to find employment.

Good luck with your research,

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn, Thanks for getting back to me.  I really appreciate your time and interest in my search. You have made an interesting comment about tracking down single people and it does make sense.  I know that he had previously worked in Colorado as a miner before moving to the Mohawk Mine so perhaps I need to focus there.   I am also wondering if the reference to Illinois could be a connection to a Coughlin family that I found there.  Same parents names, also a son named James who also died in 1913 but January I think.  He was a barber so with that knowledge and then looking at the various census original documents it appears that this is not the same family - but it could have been a relative that my James went to from Ireland.  I have been told that it was common for Irish family members to travel to and join up with relatives in other countries when they emigrated.  I guess I have many long hours ahead of me.    Thank you very much.  Anne
