Isaac Duffy, Cookstown, 1824

I would like to hear if anyone could provide any information on Isaac Duffy.  He is listed in the Freemason's in Cookstown, with a date of 1824.  I believe an Isaac Duffy is the father of my James Duffy (b. 1827, unk where in Ireland).  I believe an Isaac Duffy was married to "Mary Anne" (b. 1801, but unk where in Ireland).  They had daughter Elizabeth (b. 1818 unk where in Ireland), Mary (b. 1820, b. "in vicinity of Belfast), Isaac (b. 1824, unk where in Ireland), and my James as above.  This family was found in Ottawa Canada in early 1830's.  Any help would be appreciated.  James married Mary Anne Woodburn of Garvagh in Ottawa....they had six boys: Isaac Smyth, Augustus, Alexander Mayne, William Knox, Frederick Hunter and Andrew Cochrane...all in Canada.  Maybe these names of the sons' would help (naming patterns).  Info on censes records for the sons of James/Mary in Canada only state Ireland, one says Irish Free State, and another Northern Ireland for birthplace of their father.Thank you.  Karen

Hello Karen

Denise has asked me to investigate your enquiry; Perhaps you will clarify for me:

Do you know if Isaac as listed in Cookstown (Canada?) 1824 was married or single? I will tell you what I have found but none of this ios totally accurate to your names etc:

James       10.11.1826 born in Castlemaine, Co.Roscommon no address given - Father James and mother Mary (no surname) Sponsors were Thady and Mary Lyons

Elizabeth 25.11.1821 Co. Cavan Mother Mary Brady and James Duffy - Sponsors James and Anne Brady

Isaac       21.12.1825  Co. Cavan Mother Mary Brady and James Duffy - Sponsors James and Anne Brady

The only Mary nr. date 7.2.1820 is to James Duffy and Ann Ward from Dundalk, Co.Louth

I have Isaac baptized 1804 in Co.Antrim St. Annes, Shankill - father James and Mother Mary This Isaac married to Mary Anne (baptised 1801) but this would make her very young to have had Elizabeth in 1818: I have Elizabeth as baptised 25.11.1821. You might like to write to the Ulster Historical Foundation (Antrim & Down) as they may be able to help.

I did find a family of Isaac Duffy born? 1824 with children of similar names to Alexander and Augusta but not your Duffy as they were still in Ireland Also I had a James and Ann Ward from Dundalk Co.Louth but the children did not match any of your dates.

There is 9 James Duffy showing as born or baptised in 1826-29 and I have checked each one.

I also check the Griffiths Valuation but that shows several Duffy's as lease holders but mostly in the Co.Antrim and the dates do not tally with those that you have shown.

However have a look at the above: be careful though about the names and the dates to see if anything here might set you on the right path. Many records from this era were destroyed during the troubles but if we could ascertain just one fact, it might lead us to a lot more

I will help as much as I am able, if you can forward me something definate from the above. I am Jennifer Jean and  you can reach me on killeedy1@irelandxo.com In the meantime, I wish you every success in your search

Jennifer Jean,

I just got back on this site and read your research...thank you! I believe I responded to you way back at your email address.

I still have not found anything of my Duffy's. True, the information you found does not match anything I have in my records. Such a hard search for these family members!

I will not give up, but after all this time, seems futile.

Blessings to you!

Karen Duffy
