Ireland Vacation/ Kenmare/Sneem Area

Hello, I'm planning a visit to the Kenmare, Sneem area in July. My ancestors were the Sullivans, Morris and Fitzgeralds. My great x2 grandfather Richard Sullivan (BD: 1844) from Scarteen came to America in 1883. His wife (Johanna Fitzgerald from Bohacogram) followed with their children (Daniel, James, John, Catherine, Henry, Denis and Richard) in 1887. My challenge is tracing my greatx3 grandfather Daniel Sullivan (Richard's father) who I believe based on a baptismal record for Richard was married to Johanna Morris. We all know that the name Sullivan was very common and paired with Daniel makes it only more difficult to research. Baptismal records for Richard Sullivan and Catherine Sullivan BD: 1846) suggest they had the same parents, but are listed with different townlands. The record for Richard has been a challenge to read, but I believe it is Derrygarrane and for Catherine is Maulnagower. After the birth of Catherine I cannot find Catherine, Johanna, or Daniel anywhere. The marriage certificate of Johanna and Richard indicates that Daniel was deceased at the time they married in 1869. The marriage records for the time frame when they (Johanna and Daniel) married are not available and I have searched to no avail. Also no death record for Daniel. Richard and Catherine were infants when the famine began and I often wonder if Johanna or Daniel or even Catherine may have died. If Johanna remarried, I would not know how to find her. My questions are: Are there records available for the Kenmare workhouse? Is there a cemetry in the area where famine victims were buried? Does anyone know if the records of the Catholic church in Kenmare and Sneem are available to view by the public? I'm reaching a point where I feel like I've exhausted the obvious. I suspect I have actually run across Daniel along the way, but didn't recognize it. If anyone has a suggestion it would be much appreciated. Thanks Sheryl Sullivan Wildoner

Dear Sheryl:  Thank you for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.  There are several sites that you may be interested in viewing before your trip.  The website for St. Michael's Church in Sneem is located here:  http://stmichaelschurchsneem.org/index.html    I have contacted the parish office for you to see if there is someone who may be able to assist you with your research when you are there.  When I hear back from them, I will let you know on this thread.

Another site that is worth looking at is the Kenmare Local Studies section of the Kenmare Library.  They have a very informative brochure which I will include here for you.  They are staffed and have some online material that you can view before you travel.  In addition, I would highly recommend that you contact them prior to your trip to let them know what you are interested to try to find.  http://www.kerrylibrary.ie/uploads/2/5/1/5/25158039/kerry_library_local_history__archives_brochure_.pdf  You will note that the email address, telephone number and other details are included in this brochure together with further website information.

If you need any further assistance, please let me know.

Kind regards,

Jane

Thank you Jane, I look forward to hearing from you regarding St Michael's Church response.  I have not been very lucky in finding many of my ancestors marriage registrations.

We did plan on visiting the library, thank you for the advice on contacting them in advance. I will do that.  Thanks again,

Sheryl

Hello Jane,

I wondered if you had heard backfrom the parish regarding records that may not be on line from the 1815-1825 time frame.

I'm having no luck at all.

Thank you,

Sheryl

Dear Sheryl:

Unfortunately, I did not hear back from St. Michael's parish office.  It may be worth your while to call into them (note the office hours) in person as they may be able to assist you then.  In addition, I would recommend that you contact the library prior to your visit as they may have further guidance for you.

I will make further enquiries and see what else I can find for you as to further resources.

Please keep in contact with me prior to travel.

All the best,

Jane

Have you thought about spending the vacation there. I can give you some G Adventures Discount Code, to spend a memorable holiday in Ireland. It's worth it. Kenmare Bay is a must location for tourists. My family moved there three years ago, and I know how perfect this area is for a good living. When I had been there, I get impressed by the immense coastlines and wild nature. The small rural villages are a must to visit, including Killorglin. The locals here are willing to drink a coffee with a foreign, and they would also help you find your ancestors.

It is essential to know your ancestors, and you are doing the right thing that you are looking for them. The reason you haven't found them yet is that one of them has changed his name or surname. It can be, and it would significantly complicate your search. I would also recommend that you transfer your searches to social networks. This will increase your chances.
I wish you good luck and hope that you will be able to find your relatives. If you have already gone to Ireland, then go to a ski resort to unwind. This will allow you to relax and gather your strength. When I'm lost, I always go to Blue House Skis resorts.
