Info on the Lavelle Family from Mayo or Clare

I would like to know where my great great great grandfather's family are from. My 3x great grandfather is James Lavelle. James stowed away to Australia with his brother possibly around 1880-1882 and was born in Mayo around 1860-1865. James married Sarah Harvey Amps who was born to English immigrants and had 6 children together (2 girls & 4 boys). James' mother was supposedly French or French descent, had 3 sisters who were nuns and my grandmother has always told me that Lavelles' are from Clare, but I'm not quite sure about that, because I found an 'Immigration Deposit Journal' online which includes his name, wife's name and him being born in Mayo.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I looked at the this Irish Times website which shows where surnames were found in the mid-19th century based on Griffiths Valuation data. 87% of the Lavelles were in Co. Mayo primarily in two parishes: Achill and Kilmore which are both on the Atlantic coast. Do you have his parents names which will help with a search. Achill records start in 1868 and Kilmore Erris in 1859.

I don't really know James' parents names, but I am on Ancestry.com and it has came up with a few names which I'm not quite sure which one is his parents

R.K.:

Do you know his brother's name and was he younger or older than James? Don you have the names of any other siblings?

I don't know his brother's name, but my grandmother has told me that he wasn't much older than James himself and with his sisters... I don't know anything about them, apart from knowing that his sisters were Nuns.

My grandmother is a great-granddaughter to James and she has a 2nd cousin who is James' granddaughter and I could maybe get my grandmother to get in contact with her, if she knows anything.

Hi R.K

Have you got a copy of the Marriage Certificate ?

James Lavelle b: 1860

+Sarah Amps  b: 1863      m: 1887  Goulburn, N.S.W.  Reg. No. 3707/1887

It may give parents names. Civil Birth Registration commenced in Ireland in 1864 so would have to rely on Church Records if they exist prior to that date.

Best of luck in your search. Live in Galway but have an Interest in Goulburn / Bathurst area as my  Great Great Grandparents emigrated to that area!

Hey Gerlish

I do not have a copy of the marriage certificate, but I'd been on the 'NSW Government State Records' and there happens to be 8 Lavelles' that came to Australia and James came over with his brother.

The results came with John and William Lavelle being shipped out on the 'Cardigan Castle' in 1883 to Sydney

On the point about Lavelle being French, I think the Lavelle is the anglicised version of Fábhail which existed well before the 1798 landing of French at Killala... that myth also does the round in my family, that we are descendants of fleeing French aristocrats!!!

I am also looking for ancestors named Lavelle. The one name I have is Thomas Lavelle. He was born in Ireland around 1865. He emigrated to the US (New Jersey) and married a woman named Mary Anderson, who may be from Co. Meath. Thomas died in 1917, and he is my great-grandfather. We have absolutely no information, so anything that might help would be appreciated.

Paul:

Can you get a death certificate or possibly an obit which might show his parents names? Civil registration for births started in 1864 so if Thomas was actually born in 1865 (many emigrants adjusted their age when they came to the States) a birth record may exist.

Thanks for your reply. I will try and find a death certificate for him. A cousin in Ireland has done some research and found about six Thomas Lavelles born around the same time, all but one in the Galway/Mayo area. The name of the parents would be very useful.

Thanks again,

Paul

I am also looking for Lavelle’s. My three times great grandmother was Ellen Lavelle. She married Michael Ruddy. My two times great grandfather was Bryan Bernard Ruddy. In one of the above replies is mentions a Bryan Lavell. Makes me wonder if we are related. Had you done AncestryDNA?

I would also love help on my Lavelle family line that originated out of County Mayo. John P. Lavelle was born in 1835 in County Mayo. He was the son of John Lavelle, who I think was alive in 1856, and Ann Hanahan (or maybe Hanaghan), who was deceased before 1856. He arrived in the US in October 1856 on the "James Foster" as a single man, 21 years of age.  He ended up in Charleston SC, marrying and having children. Does anyone know this Lavelle family line from County Mayo?

Anne:

I looked on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the early John Lavelle baptismal record in Mayo with father John and mother Ann was in 1859 which is too late for your interests. Likely your John was from a parish likely in West Mayo that no longer has records back to 1835. FYI.There were many Lavelle families on Achill Island. Have you considered DNA testing?

As it happens, I was on my Ancestry DNA site last evening and was thinking that my Lavelle relatives have left very little DNA evidence or they just haven't been tested. I did get one match of a 4th-6th cousin (the first and only blood relative to show up!) a while ago. She could not provide much information that seemed relative to my search, but she did mention that the Lavelles in her husband's family came from Knockbreague, Co. Mayo. His father Patrick "Sonny" Lavelle was from the same place. Perhaps that will help some of you.

Paul

FYI Knockbreaga townland is in Burrishoole civil parish. Unfortunately, records for the RC parish do not begin until 1872.

Hello! Thank you for your quick reply! My father and uncle (now pushing 80 years old), cousins and I (ages 40s & 50s) -- all descended from John P. Lavelle (1835-1890) -- have done the DNA testing through ancestry.com. We see connections with our US cousins descended from John... but not any connection to those descended from, for example, John's siblings in Ireland or the generation before him. Is ancestry.com DNA popular to do over in Ireland? On ancestry.com, other family group sheets say John Lavelle was born in "Leitrim, Mayo, Ireland" abt 1800 and his wife Ann (Hanahan) Lavelle died in "Ballina, Mayo, Ireland" before 1853. Maybe that's a lead. I'm not sure where they picked up Ballina or Leitrim... don't see underlying sources. Thank you, Anne

Anne:

DNA testing in Ireland has slowly evolved compared to people living in the States/Canada/Australia etc. They use Ancestry, My Heritage and other companies. Can't explain the Leitrim, Mayo annotation. I don't think you will find any death records for Ballina before 1853.

All the best!

Anne, I would be interested to know if we are related through our DNA on Ancestry. My three times great grandmother was Ellen Lavelle. I wonder if she was an aunt to your John. We are from Co. Mayo and I believe it could be from Derrycorrib. Her children would have been born around John's birth. My two times great grandfather was born in 1833. My user name on Ancestry is Debi Ruddy Ropp.

Hello. Is it possible there is someone out there who knows anything about John Lavalle (1811ish-1897)?

He married Mary McDermott (1815ish- 1892) in Ireland.

They did have at least one child in Ireland, Cate Lavalle baptized 26 Apr 1845 Addergoole, Co Mayo.

The sponsors were Patrick McDermott and Rose Mulheran.

John and Mary eventually ended up in Mara Township, Ontario, Canada.

Fingers crossed.

Celia

I think me and Bropaul are looking for the same family. My great grandmother Agnes Lavelle had a brother named Thomas. How do I get in touch with him?

JessWalsh

Hi Jess,

I hope this connection proves to be correct. It could be the breakthrough that I have been hoping for. You can reach me here: pdiveny@gmail.com
