In search of Nestors and Dillons

My great grandmother was Mary Nestor.   She arrived Australia on 16 May 1859 aboard the Alabama.  It was a Corry & Co vessel..  Mary married in 1862 at the gold-mining town of Beechworth, Victoria.   She had seven children, my beloved grandmother being the fourth child.   Mary died aged 92 years at Richmond, Victoria in April 1928.   She had been a true pioneer.

Little is known of her, though she stated on her marriage certificate that she came from County Galway.   Her father was a farmer, named Edward Nestor and her mother's maiden name was Dillon.   I don't have a christian name.   Mary and her husband were Catholics.

Mary would have been born around 1836, for she was 23 years of age when she stepped ashore in Melbourne.

For the first two years or so, Mary was in service, most likely to pay off the cost of her passage to Australia.

Any details would be greatly appreciated.

I have attached a segment from Mary Nestor's marriage certificate. I want to draw attention to her mother's maiden name, for I am unable to recognise Mary's mother's christian name, though the surname 'Dillon' is clear enough.

I think the mystery forename may be “Onnor” which looks like a phonetic rendering of Honor, (Honora or Nora).

Hello Elwyn

Thank you for responding.   I am sure you are correct about her name.  It is so heartening to receive your reply as my efforts with various Irish heritage groups had not produced any results.  And now that I have both names for Mary Nestor's parents, other Ireland XO volunteers may have some information.  My great grandmother, Mary Nestor arrived in Melbourne, Victoria aboard the Corry & Co vessel, Alabama on 15 May 1859.   Mary would have been aged 23 years.   I believe she went into service, probably to repay the debt she had incurred, that being the cost of the sea passage to Australia.   In 1862 Mary married a Frenchman, Theodore Laurent Thomas.   His family had property near Nancy, France, though Theodore was not monied.   Theodore and Mary lived and worked in Omeo, a gold mining boom town in Victoria's high country (think Man from Snowy River).   They had 7 children, my beloved grandmother being their fourth child.   They lived on some acres within the town, the boys growing up to operate their own businesses.   I have included a photo of the property in Omeo, though most of the town was burnt to the ground in the 1939 bush fires.   They boys were known in Omeo on account of their blacksmith, saddlery and funeral businesses.   Theodore passed away in 1914 at the age of 89 years.   Mary remained until 1921, the year she left Omeo and traveled to Richmond, an inner suburb of Melbourne.   She lived in the home of my grandmother, Olympia until her death at the age of 92 years in 1928.   Mary had been a true pioneer.   Melbourne was founded in 1835, and Mary's arrival in 1859 was at a time when Victoria's gold rush was overwhelming the colonial authorities.   Convictism had just  ceased and miners from Europe, China and America were flooding into the colony.

My knowledge that Mary's family was in County Galway was only learned by what she wrote on her marriage certificate.   There was no parish mentioned, but she and Theodore were Catholics.

Thank you for your assistance.   It is much appreciated.

A tree on Ancestry suggests the family was from Corskeaghmore, Galway, Ireland

Corskeagh More Townland, Co. Galway

Mary had a brother John 1831-1910. He was still living there when he died. And a brother Thomas 1833-. The tree does not mention Mary.

mtvrdk@gmail.com

Peter,

I think the 1828 marriage that Mary has found looks very promising. The groom there was “Edmd.” Short for Edmond obviously. Edmond is interchangeable (in Ireland anyway) with Edward. So it appears to fit perfectly with the parents names on Mary’s marriage certificate. And it was in Galway which is what your information is where Mary was from.

Griffiths Valuation (1855) of Corskeaghmore lists Edmund Nester. He was farming plot 1 jointly with Patrick Nester and Patrick Nester jr. Total of about 96 acres. It’s still farmland today, judging by the satellite view. There are some farm buildings on the site but they may not date back to the 1850s. You might need to go in person to see who and what is there today.

To Elwyn and Mary TV, my sincere thanks for supplying this information.   It is beyond fantastic.

I offer a few images of Omeo as it was then and how it is today.  The painting is a re-imagined view of Omeo.   It depicts the Thomas cottages on the left side, a dredge engaged in mining within the Livingstone Creek and a bullock team towing machinery.   Bear in mind that Omeo was hundreds of miles from major towns and was accessed by earthen tracks.   It would have taken weeks to get steam equipment to Omeo.  The photograph is another view of their cottages.

It is worth telling viewers that the Australian gold rush was off the scale on account of its excess.   The attached image of a pair of solid gold horseshoes comes from Beechworth, the town where Mary Nestor was married.   Today, Beechworth is a lovely, historic town in Victoria's mountain area.   Gold prospecting is still carried out, mainly by people wanting to take a pan and find some gold specks in the creek.

A lucky digger, with riches beyond imagining, shod his horse with horseshoes made of solid gold.   He ran it about the town in a race as a way to boast.  And gold prices as they are today would make those horseshoes worth many times the value as shown.

Bagwan

Bagwan, thank you for sharing the story of your ancestors, It sounds like they were integral in establishing Omeo. Does any family still live there?

Regards- Mary

mtvrdk@gmail.com

Hello Mary

They do, but I doubt they have any interest in those earlier times.   I lived as a child with my grandmother, Olympia at Richmond.   She had been Mary's fourth child.   I was too young to ask her any questions.  However, aunts and uncles did occasionally mention Mary at the home in Richmond, but by that time Mary would have been a very old lady.   Olympia bore 12 children, but none of them lived or worked in Omeo.  She married Frederick Fitton in 1890 and the pair of them went off in search for gold.   Frederick had learnt much mining technique from Theodore and he bought into a profitable gold mine in a remote mountainous place called Sunnyside.   When I tried to visit the remains of Sunnyside, recent bush fires had burnt what little there was that remained.  It would seem that my younger brother and I are the ones from our family who are researching the life of Mary Nestor.  What I did see was the mine adit at Sunnyside.   And as the price of gold continues to rise, there are mining syndicates which are re-opeing old mines.   Modern techniques are enabling them to re-mine the tailings as well as re-opening the mines.

Thank you Mary.

Mary and Elwyn

Both of you have made a huge difference to my search for my great grandmother.   The riddle has been solved.

What remains for me is to find out if descendants of Mary and Edward still live in their area.   Perhaps a good place for me to start is by contacting the Catholic churches and schools nearby.   Tuam might be a good starting point.

As it happens, my wife and I will be visiting London this September  Should I get lucky with contacting some descendants, we may try to visit Tuam and its immediate surrounds.

Thank you.

Peter,

If you plan to visit Ireland, you might want to complete the Meet and Greet form found on this website. A local volunteer might be able to help you on your journey.

mtvrdk@gmail.com

Hi Mary

I tried with the Meet & Greet form, though it failed to complete.   Should I come to Ireland, it is likely to be in September 2026.

Another matter is that I would like to offer a small donation.   My preference for doing so is through Paypal.   I will not place CC information on the internet.

Bagwan

Peter,

I forwarded your concern and question. I hope you get to Ireland.

Hi Peter!

Mary asked me to respond to your two questions/issues. We do not have a PayPal option at this time. Thanks for thinking of us but I certainly understand your concerns about not sharing credit card info.

Not sure why your Meet and Greet failed to complete. I checked and other requests are being received. Did you fill out all the required fields and then hit submit and it did not work or were there fields that you could not complete? In any event, if you give me your information about where and when, I will submit the request for you. Thanks!

Hello Roger

Thanks for this assistance.

I don't believe I am interpreting the form correctly.   I filled it out according to my search, that being my ancestor.   The county is Galway, the parish is Tuam and the dates of my visit are 1 Sept 2026 to the 30 Sept 2026.  I expect to visit Ireland between those dates.

Thank you

Peter:

When your plans finalize later this year, let me know the exact date when you will be in Co. Galway. From the comments above, it would appear that you would be interested in Corskeagh More Townland within the civil parish of Kilkerrin. Kilkerrin is east of Tuam.

Roger, thank you.  The civil parishes are confusing to someone like myself. I believe you would be correct in your assessment, but Ireland is a long way to come for us, so we will endeavor to see some of your beautiful country.   I will call again closer to our departure time.

Many thanks.

Hello Roger

Hope all is well.

The last time we corresponded, you asked that I advise our time for arriving in Country Galway. I am pleased to tell you that our plans are now arranged. My wife, Barbara and I will be in Galway, staying at Citypoint Apartments on Sunday 19 October. We will have a car.

You mentioned that we would probably be interested in Corskeagh More Townland within the civil parish of Kilkerrin.

We will have arrived from Dublin.

Any advice from you would be most appreciated.

Thanking you

Peter & Barbara Fitton

I submitted a Meet and Greet request for you. Not sure if we have a volunteer available in the area. Our coordinator should be in touch at some point.
