Gibson, I’m looking for records from what is now Northern Ireland, perhaps County Down

1. a marriage record date between 1824 and 1828 for a John Gibson, (born about 1802-1807) son of James Gibson and Mary (his parents’ names are given on his marriage record to his 4th wife in 1866) to Mary Martha Cooper (born about 1805-1810), he was probably a widower, he could have had a child with a first wife-name-unknown, child’s name Mary Ann.

2. birth or baptism records for their children Jane born abt 1828, Eliza born abt 1834, John Henry was born abt 1836, Matilda born abt 1836, Sarah born abt 1837, William born on November 9, 1840??

And Esther born abt 1842.

The family emigrated to Canada in 1843?

A son Alexander was born in 1845 in what is now Ontario, Canada.

According to Canadian census records they were "Free Presbyterians".

If records can be found it would solve a long standing mystery.

Thanks!

1846Galway,

Statutory recording of births didn’t start in Ireland till 1864. Prior to that we rely on church baptism records, where they exist. Not all churches have records for the period you need, and of those that do, not all are on-line. Copies are held in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast but a personal visit is required to view them. But without some idea of where in NI the family lived, it's a needle in a haystack.

I note that the family were Free Presbyterians. Probably a third of the population were Presbyterians. Cooper and Gibson are very common names locally. Thousands of them. That makes it hard too. I have attached a link to the Rosdavies Co Down site. You’ll see how many John & Mary Gibsons there were in that county alone.

Possibly DNA testing may be a way of matching with others who have additional information about where the family originate. Family Tree DNA reportedly has more people with Ulster roots than any other company. That obviously increases the chances of finding a match. If you have already tested your DNA with Ancestry, My Heritage or 23&Me you can upload your DNA results to Family Tree DNA for free and then join the North of Ireland Family History Society DNA Project. Simple instructions on how to do this can be found here:

Thanks so much!

This family is not related to me, they are very distant relatives of my spouse.

Some of the Gibson family descendants have done DNA, but I don't know much about genealogical DNA.

I'm researching them as part of a One Place Study

I will pass along your information to their descendant.
