Hynes/Hines Ireland/Newfoundland

Hello, It's been a few years, butI'm backsearching for my ancestors in Ireland and would appreciate any help.I have nowlocated3references toa Philip Hines/Hynes in Ireland:

Baptism: Philip Hines, May 28, 1771at Slieverue, Co Kilkenny, born to Thomas Hines & MaryO Ryan. I also found a 1777 baptism record for Mary Hines to the same parents. And found the 1770 marriage record for Thomas (of Thomastown)Hines & Mary (of Balleribeen) Ryan.

Baptism: Philip Hynes, Dec 4, 1784 at Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, born to Maurice& Mary Dray. (Maurice is not a common name in my family history).

Death/Burial: Philip Hynes,Dec. 26, 1818 at Dunsany (RC) Parish, Church of the Assumption in Co. Meath.

I don't know if the deceased Philip is one of the baptised Philips. I have not located adeath/burial of Philiphere in Newfoundland.

Hi Wayne, I am looking over unanswered queries and as you are probably aware we rely on church records at that remove. You appear to have done very well indeed.

Two things to mention, the person buried in Meath at Dunsany is unlikely to be the same person as lived in Kilkenny unless there is a reason he would be there, there is a site here that you can search free on surnames, other information is subscription. https://www.johngrenham.com/ I cannot check as I have used up my free allocation.

Recently on a private genealogy group on Facebook that I am a member some was asksing about Hynes or Hines also and another poster mentioned that sometimes the surname Hynes etc was used as Owens, I have checked this in McLysaghts Surnames of Ireland and he states this occurs mainly in Ulster and sometimes Owens is a variant of McKeown etc. Owens is a Welsh name apparently.

The Facebook poster asking about Hynes said this explained a lot to her DNA wise. It is not that uncommon in Ireland and locals appeared to know people could have an official name and a local name. No idea why but have seen it on numerous occassions.

Good Luck

Pat
