Hugh Savage & Mary Carvil. Loughinisland & Ballynahinch

Hugh Savage (born c1834 Ireland, died December 10, 1884 Liverpool) and Mary Carvil (born c1834 Ireland, buried 21 Jan 1915, Liverpool) married at Loughinisland 18 October 1851. One a Catholic the other a Protestant. They kept their marriage a secret for as long as they could. Mary wore her wedding ring about her neck. One of her sisters could not bear to see them living this way and let their secret out (If I remember correctly Mary had at least three sisters). Hugh and Sarah were no longer accepted by their families. They had managed to save a few sovereigns which Mary kept hidden. They left for Liverpool. Known children born in Ireland are:

  • Patrick John born 1854 Ireland. I think his baptism was at Loughinisland but cannot find records to view. Their is an online reference to a Patrick Savage baptised 19 June but not sure if this is my Patrick.
  • Ann Jane born Ireland c1860.

According to the UK 1911 Census Hugh & Mary had 14 children, by 1911 only 4 were living. Many of the children may have been born in Ireland as only four are mentioned on any UK census as being born in Liverpool. During the 1930s one of their daughters and a grandaughter visited Ballynahinch to see the places connected with family.

When in Liverpool family oral history states they came from Ballynahinch,, Co Down.

I would appreciate any further information on this family whilst they were in Ireland. Thanking you in advance.

The couple had at least 4 children baptized in Ireland:

Church Baptism Savage Ann Jane 1859 Co. Down

Church Baptism Savage Mary 1861 Co. Down

Sometimes family stories are just that--stories. Sometimes they are partially true. It seems in this case that Hugh and Mary did not have to flee to the UK due to their interfaith marriage being discovered. They were both Catholics. They were in Ireland for at least ten years after their marriage and had many children during that time, which could not have been hidden.

Griffith’s Valuation of County Down in 1864 gives a head of household named Hugh Savage in Loughinisland, in the townland of Seavaghan.

Hello

Elwyn, thank you for the details you have provided re: the death of Hugh Savage. I appreciate you looking that information up. He is not my Hugh, as my Hugh died in Liverpool 1884.

Hello Patricia,

Thank you for the details you have provided re: the Savage/Carvil family. I appreciate you looking that information up. I was aware of Patrick and Ann Jane so really pleased with the additional details of three other children. Only another four to discover. :) Because of the large gap in known birthdates of the 14 children I believed there to be many baptisms in Ireland. 1866 is the earliest date I currently have of a child being baptised outside of Ireland. 1878 being the last birthdate of a child in England, so five known English births in total. Poor Mary spent her whole adult life pregnant. It was a tragic existence losing so many of her children then losing her husband in 1884.

I have seen the original parish record for the marriage of Hugh & Mary. They were not both Catholics. It may state they were on the parish register but as we know, you cannot believe all that you read on any documents, for various reasons. My own original marriage certificate and the original parish record of my parents both have discrepancies. One of which was pointed out on the day but as it had already been written in, the registrar refused to change it without a delay to the marriage, so the error remained on record.

Hugh and Sarah were from Ballynahinch, I can only speculate on their chosen place of marriage. I was told by family that their marriage was a secret but for how long they kept this secret is a mystery. I know they kept their marriage a secret but keeping so many children a secret would have proven nigh on impossible. They remained in Ireland until they had the means to travel to England, where they settled and lived out their days in Liverpool.

During the 1930s one of their daughters and also their grandaughter visited the ancestral seat (so to speak) Ballynahinch. I have a photograph of their visit. Their daughter met and spoke with a lady who definitely looked very similar to herself.

Once again, thank you for your help.

The information you have given below for the four children baptised in Co Down, do you know what parish the baptisms each took place in. Was it Loughinisland? Sorry to be a bother.
