Hishon Family, Shanagolden

I am a descendant of Mortimer Hishon and Margaret Connor (O'connor) - I am always looking for more information about this family who migrated to Australia in 1851.

Ann,  you may already have this info. As I presume you already live in Australia.  Mortimer HIshon arrived in Port Jackson, Sydney on 14  August  1851 on board the sailing ship Sarah.  He was listed as aged 31 and came from Old Abbey and he could both read and write.  With him was Catherine aged 22 who came from Minevale (not clear) and Connor aged 2 who came from Old Abbey.  Google tells me Old Abbey is about two miles from Shanagolden.  Hope this is of some assistance.

Hi Ann

I am also related to Mortimer Hishon and Margaret O'Connor. I think I can improve on your family history.

My Great-Great Grandfather was Charles Samuel Anderson, who married Bridget Ann, daughter of Mortimer and Margaret.

The Hishon family came from Shannagolden, Limerick and sailed from Plymouth to Hobson's Bay, Victoria - arriving 20/8/1851 after 9 months at sea.

(below is taken from the passenger list and gives their names and ages)

HISHON    MORTIMER    38    AUG    1851    SEA    4A    346
HISHON    MARGARET    38    AUG    1851    SEA    4A    346
HISHON    MARY    18    AUG    1851    SEA    4A    346
HISHON    DANIEL    17    AUG    1851    SEA    4A    346
HISHON    BRIDGET    14    AUG    1851    SEA    4A    346
HISHON    WILLIAM    13    AUG    1851    SEA    4A    346
HISHON    MORTIMER    6    AUG    1851    SEA    4A    346

Charles Samuel Anderson came from Devon. His parents sent him to sea at 14 and he swore he would never go back home.

He served in the navy for another 14 years. At around 1862, when he came out of his time, Charles had intended on settling in Wellington, but he couldn't see much of a future in a town of all 'flax and shacks' so caught the next boat heading out to Australia instead.

In Victoria Charles met Bridget. They were married in early 1866 in Melbourne and (very quickly) started a family...

Around 1869 the young family moved to Dunedin. The town was growing rapidly and there was plenty of work there catering for the goldfield workers. They ran fish and chip shops in the centre of town for several years.

My Great Grandmother, Annie Marie was the 2nd youngest of 6 children .

Bridget died in 1877, reportedly giving birth to a 7th at a farm outside of Dunedin.

---

Mortimer Hishon also ended up in Dunedin, as did 3 of his sons, working in the goldfields and later, farming. They left Australia sometime in the 1860's, possibly without Margaret, as there seem to be no records of her outside Australia. Things had been 'rocky' between her and Mortimer, and the work may have been hard to come by, as evidenced in this item from the Melbourne Argus.

Police section - 24 June 1862

WIFE DESERTION
Mortimer Hishon was brought before the court for refusing to support his wife and children. The wife stated to the Bench that her husband had gone up the country to do work for a contractor, and that when he returned he gave her no money, and left her destitute. The arresting constable stated that £1 had been found upon the prisoner, and that he had said he would rather spend twelve months in gaol than give his wife a shilling,
The Bench remanded the prisoner for a week, and ordered 10s. out of the £1 to be given to the woman. The prisoner pleaded hard to be let off, saying that he was unable to live with his wife, as she was so often drunk ; and after some consideration the Bench postponed the case till Wednesday, to allow of time to make inquiries.

Mortimer Hishon (senior) died in 1881 in Invercargill, William (unknown), and Daniel in 1892 in Winton, Southland,

Mortimer (junior) lived to the ripe old age of 101, dying in 1945 in Southland. This article and photo of him made the front page of many of the major dailies when he 'hit the ton'.

I hope that this all ties in with what you already know.

I would love to find out more about Bridget, the rest of her family, and the life they left behind.

If anyone has any additional information or stories, please let me know...

Just been doing a little reasearch and there were two Mortimer Hishon's In Victoria in the early 1800's.

One was married to a Cath Ginan and the other to Margaret O'Conner

So the article about wife desertion may not have been our Mortimer - it does seem likely they could have been related though as Ann's info above says he was from Old Abbey:

Mortimer HIshon arrived in Port Jackson, Sydney on 14  August  1851 on board the sailing ship Sarah.  He was listed as aged 31 and came from Old Abbey and he could both read and write.  With him was Catherine aged 22 who came from Minevale (not clear) and Connor aged 2 who came from Old Abbey.  Google tells me Old Abbey is about two miles from Shanagolden.  Hope this is of some assistance.
