Herbert Family

Will be visiting in Tipperary in 2014 and trying to find any information on my family from the 1800's.  Edward Herbert and wife Bridget Kennedy.  Edward and Bridget married in 1865 and Edward died in 1887.  I would like to find their place of marriage and where they were buried so I may pay my respects. Only info I have is that they were married in Silvermines and most of their children were born there.  My grandmother was born in Youghal (?).  Edward's death record says Capparoe.  Any help is appreciated.

You will find a marriage transcript free on familysearch.org free of charge

Edward Herbert married Bridget Kennedy on the 23rd January 1865 in Silvermines, his father was John Herbert and her father was John Kennedy, the original marriage would give you normally the address before marriage for each.

Herbert is not a common surname and should be easy to trace, I would associate it with Templemore.

If he was Roman Catholic, you will find a match for a baptism of a Edmond Herbert son of John Herbert in Templemore RC records, the name Edmond and Edward are often interchangeable

As you said, the children are born in Silvermines, they are all baptised there, you can find transcript in tipperarynorth.rootsireland.ie (there is a fee)

I will list them here :

Honoria 1865

Bridget 1867

Mary 1870

Margaret 1873

John 1875

Anne 1879

Sarah 1882

Michael 1884

I would go and visit the Silvermines Church if I were you and look for headstones, also try to contact the parish office/ parish priest. A copy of the marriage certificate can be ordered throught a researcher like me (I charge ?10 + ?4 per cert, so if you only get one certificate it costs ?14, 2 ?18...etc) or online for ?20 I think on certificates.ie, researcher's copy are usually ?4 if you get it directly when you visit the GRO research room in Dublin.

transcripts of local graveyards can be found in the Tipperary Studies in Thurles free of charge, you can contact them on the internet throught their website www.tipperarylibraries.ie search for local studies

Also you could search the land records, in particular the Valuation records, to trace exactly where the Herbert family lived if you don't have surviving relatives in situ.

I hope you enjoy your visit in 2014.

I believe your Kennedy's and my ancestors were friends.  Some of my ancestors were born in Youghalarra and also lived for a time in the Silvermines.  Catharine Kennedy was one of the sponsors at a Baptism of one of my relatives in 1846. She may be one of yours.  If you decide to purchase the Baptism or other records of your ancestors please let me know if the name Gregan, Greggan or any other variant of the name appears as a sponsor or a witness.  I would be interested to fill in my family's story a little more as I am very interested in this little group of friends. I hope you have a lovely trip - the Silvermines is a very charming little town.

Afternoon
I have just had a phone call from someone interested in the above post. She has said that rather than looking in Silvermines you should perhaps concentrate your search in Templeachally parish. All of the Herberts she says are one family and there is some information about them on the internet if you do a general google search, particularly in relation to some Herbert Orphan children whose father were soldiers. Unfortunately this lady is using a phone for emails and has asked that I post this for her.

If you would like to contact me, please email Clare Doyle at cdoyle@irelandxo.com

Best wishes

I have Herbert ancestors as well.  My Christopher Herbert married Catherine Reilly in Waterford in 1829 but had their daughter, Margaret, while living on Greystone Street in Carrick-on-Suir in 1835.  They eventually moved on to Liverpool and then Edward went to NYC.  RootsIreland.ie says that Margaret was baptized in 1835 in a Catholic church (even though Christopher and Catherine were married in COI).  Which Church would this be in Carrick-on-Suir as St. Nicholas is too new for her baptism, right?  Should I follow the same advice on Herberts being from one family and focus on Templeachally?

Thank you in advance!

Liz

I was interested to read these posts about the Herbert family.  I have been trying to find out the maiden name of my 3x great grandmother Mary who was married to John Cull and lived in Fanningstown Fedamore in the 1800s.  Having explored the family trees of my dna matches to known matches of my 2x great grandparents it revealed that all of the matches were descended from a particular Herbert family in Fedamore.  The furthest back was a John Herbert from Carnane, Fedamore who is listed in the Valuation Records for that area.  I think I can confidently assume that my 3x great grandmother was Mary Herbert.  Descendants of this Herbert family emigrated to Canada, Australia and Connecticut.  Another dna match suggested that Mary's sister may have married a Starr from Co Tipperary.  I see that there are lots of Herberts in Co Tipperary and wondered if they were probably part of the same family from Co Limerick.  I came across an interesting news report from 1819 about a man also called John Herbert living in Limerick City.  He had converted from Catholicism to Church of Ireland which caused a scene at his funeral in Fedamore where he 'wished to be buried with his ancestors' and local people took umbrage at a C of I burial taking place at a Catholic burial site.
