Help with finding more information on William (Gulieimus) Looney 1810 lineage , please

I am going to Ireland for two weeks at the end of April 2025 and planning on spending time in Dingle , but also Cork and surrounding counties. My Great 3x Grandfather is William (Gulielmus) Looney as born in Ireland in 1810. He died in 1909 in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA. He was married to Johama Bony born 1805. She died in 1887. Their son,James (Jacobus, Jocobus) Looney, as born 1830 in Ireland. He was married to Hanora (Nora) I am not sure how accurate the dates or spelling of names is, but this is what I have found through research.

The families emigrated to America, but not sure if they came at the same time or not, but both ended up in New Jersey by 1880 according to census records.

This is as far as I have gotten in my research. I have no idea where in Ireland they lived, but I am thinking Cork City, Cork, Ireland. I worked on this a couple of years ago and just got back to doing research and found notes I had written with William’s information…Cork and Ross, St Mary’s Cork City, Ireland Catholic. I just Googled it and found that I may be able to make headway in my search before my trip. I would appreciate any help with finding more info on this linage or advice on how to find more history of my family. Thank you.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and the free site irishgenealogy.ie and did not locate a marriage record for William married to Johanna Bony or a baptismal record for James. Maybe someone else will have more success.

Hello, I looked at the baptismal register page and think it is possible that Johanna's name was Barry, not Bony. There were over a thousand heads of household called Barry in Cork in the 1820s/30s in the Tithe Applotments, but I did not see any Bonys. Maybe keep it in mind as you research?

Hi,

Looking at census records and death records on Ancestry, there is only one William Looney in the 1880 US census in New Jersey, and he is 40 years old living with a wife Mary and four children. I could not find a 1909 death record in New Jersey for William (1810). Are you certain that William and Johanna emigrated to the US? Or was it just their children?

Regards,

Carolyn

Patrica, The baptismal register you found looks like it could be information that will help me find more about my family. It is possible that my Great 3x Grandmother’s name could very well be Barry. I will look more closely at the information I have…hopefully I will find more. A cousin did research that got me to William, but I don’t think she got any further. Thank you for your time, Carolyn.

Carolyn, My cousin found information, though not a death record, on Ancestry that William died in New Jersey so I assume he did emigrate to the US. I think that is as much as she has found on the Looneys. I did find information that his son James came to the US in 1885, but have not found either one on a passenger list yet. Thank you, Carolyn. I will keep searching.
