Hi Dennis,
Can you put the link in please or the names.
As far as I know Tipperary had Ridings, North and South. Now it's just Tipperary.

Dennis:
Could you post an example of a record with the EM? Thanks! In the meantime, I will ask one of our Co. Cork volunteers.

Margot and Roger -- Sorry for the delay responding. I've been busy cooking a St. Patrick's Day dinner for my in-laws. We've all managed to get the COVID vaccine, and this was the first time we've be able to get together in a year. I've attached a copy and a transcription (as best I can make out) of the 1901 Census form that contains the reference to "Cork E.M." It's associated with Mary Patricia Leyden and with Annie Leary. I don't know who Mary Patricia Leyden is, but Julia Leyden (nee O'Leary) had a sister-in-law named Mary Honora Leyden who was the same age as Mary Patricia Leyden, was also a nurse, and was born in Charleville, County Cork.
Hi Dennis,
Thank you for the Census records.
I have not seen this before. I would understand if it was EC = East Cork, for Kinsale.
The 1911 Census says Timothy was from County Kerry.
I see the Mary Honora Leyden birth in Charleville, (registered in Kilamllock, the nearest reg. district)
She may have used Patricia as her Confirmation name.

Thanks! I received my second Covid shot yesterday.
I can see EM as a possibility but I can also see ER. Note the M in Medical nurse. It does not match up with the second letter in EM or ER.

Margot and Roger,
Thanks for your suggestions! Following Roger's suggestion, I took another look at the 1901 Census form and it's clear to me now (I can't believe that I didn't see it before) that there are clearly at least two different styles of writing on the form. And there in line 6 (for Annie Leary) is a capital R (in the phrase "Read + write") that is exactly like the letter I have concerns about. So, Mary Patricia Leyden was clearly born in Cork E.R. Given that this location, along with Mary's age and occupation, are consistent with my Mary Honora Leyden, I think Margot's suggestion that Patricia may be a confirmation name is a reasonable explanation and that this Mary Leyden is more than likely the same person as my Mary Honora Leyden (how may Mary Leydens who knew Julia O'Leary could there have been in 1901 who were 20 years old and nurses?!). So you've solved my problem! Thanks so much!
I hope you are your families are well and that you soon will not have to worry about Covid.
Best regards,
Dennis
