Help in searching Hanley and Ward family members.

Hi,

I am trying to trace family members with the Hanley and Ward surname in Ireland.

Unfortunately, the birth location for my 2nd great grandfather is inconsistent in the 1871 -1911 censuses with William Hanley documented  as being born in Cork and in different locations in London from 1825-1830.

William's wife, Margaret Hanley ( I believe nee Ward, born 1834-1836) my 2nd great grandmother is documented as having been born in Ireland - both Cork and Co Mayo are listed. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any information on these family members or their families.

I appreciate any help in my searches.

Thanks,

Penny

We would need the parents names for William Hanley and Margaret Ward in order to confirm any baptismal record that may be available. It is also possible that the baptismal record is not available because the church no longer has the records. In the mid-19th century, the surname Ward was found in every county with Donegal and Galway having the most Ward households. The surname Hanley was less common and was found most frequently in Roscommon followed by Tipperary and Cork.

Can I suggest that you consider a general DNA test? Your matches may provide clues of the origins of William Hanley and Margaret Ward in Ireland.

Hi Roger,

Thank you for your response, I appreciate your suggestion and the information you have provided me.

I am currently working with limited information on William and Margaret that I have managed to obtain from the 1871 to 1911 censuses of Paddington London - I have been unable to find them together or confirm their listing in any census before 1871.

According to the information included in these censuses William and Margaret had 4 children  between 1858 and 1874 - Edward and William Maile,and Elizabeth and Ada Margaret- who is my great grandmother.

Unfortunately,I have been only able to find birth certificates for their sons  - both document Margaret Hanley nee WARD as their mother but Francis/Frank Hanley is named as Edwards father and William Hanley is named as William's father?

Although I have been unsuccessful in locating any marriage record or a certificate for William Hanley and Margaret Ward, I have found the banns and a 1851 wedding certificate for Francis Hanley and Margaret Ward in the parish of Marylebone London. This document listed their fathers as Thomas Hanley and John Ward.

I am unsure if Francis / Frank Hanley and William Hanley are brothers or one of the same person ?

It is also not helpful that the place of birth for Margaret in each census changes from Cork, Co Mayo and Marylebone and William is only documented as being born in Cork in the 1911 census.

Thanks again - I will use the information you provided in my searches.

Penny:

I used the father's names from the 1851 marriage certificate to look for William/Francis Hanley and Margaret Ward but too many possibilities are shown on Roots Ireland.

Hi Roger,

I appreciate your help - I guess I may never solve this one.
