Hello!
My ancestry has linked me to County Donegal. I don’t know how to begin trying to trace a surname. I’d love to know how to proceed.

Try Griffith's Valuation c1850, www.askaboutireland.ie - Free Site, Census of Ireland 1901. Free. You will find names with various spellings, so you will have to decide!

Do you know when your Irish ancestor left Ireland? If It was pre 1850, there are very few records available in Co. Donegal for that time period. You can also use this site https://johngrenham.com/ Enter the surname and then go to Co. Donegal and see where the the surname was found in the county based on the Griffiths Valuation data that McCoy mentioned.
