Hartnett Search

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find information on the family of Margaret Hartnett/ Hartnell. According to her obituary, she was born in 1838 in Abbeyfeale, Limerick, Ireland. She died in November 1915 In New Haven Township which was outside of Owosso, Michigan, United States.

She came to New York, USAat the age of 13 with a sister (unnamed). Married Thomas Farrell in Lockport, New York, USA at the age of 18.

I would like to find her birth, the names of her siter, parents and other siblings.and where she was born in the parish of Abbeyfeale, Also was that where she lived before she left Ireland? She would have been my 2nd great grandmother.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Margaret Hartnett was a real popular name in Abbeyfeale RC parish. There were six baptismal records: 1834(2) 1835 1836 (2) 1837 but none in 1838. We will need some other info to try and determine which baptismal record (if any) was for your ancestor. Does the death record show parents names?

We also have an XO Chronicles site https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…;  where you can post the stories of your ancesotrs who left Ireland.

Roger,

Thank you for responding. According to her death record on Seeeking Michigan, her father's name was Patrick His surname was recorded in cursive handwriting as Garnett, but it is hard to read. Her mother is listed as unknown. However, the informant was the undertaker. I've included her death cert. and her obit. Her children were: Margaret, Ellen, Thomas II, and William in no particular order.

Maybe we got lucky-- only one of the six records had a father named Patrick. Emigrants frequently changed the age coming to the States or before marriage. Here is a link to the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0855 ; so you can see the actual entry of the baptism. The mother's maiden name was likely Heraghty. No guarantee this is the correct record but it is a very strong lead.

Hi Roger,

Thank you for taking the time to locate this record for me. I really appreciate it. I too hope that we're on the right track.Unfortunately, i wasn't able to open the record that you attached. Would you please send it again? Also, I wasn't able go to the exact record using the link that you provide. Would you please advise me on how I can access the record.

In addition, I wonder if it would be possible to locate her port of departure ad her passenger record. By the way three years after arriving in New York she married Thomas Farrellin Lockport, New York. According to his obit, he was born in Tipperary, but I'm not sure if that was the town or the county.I don't know the names of his parents either. I do know that he served in Michigan's 8th Cavalry in the 1860s. He died in November 1879 in Shiawassee Co, Michigan, USA.

Thanks again for finding this info. for me. I've been thinking if this is her parents, is it possible to locate their marriage record. Also are sponsors the same as godparents in the US? If that is the case, then her godparents may have been her mother's sister Mary and her husband Patrick Keefe?
