Hare / O'Hare / O'Hehir - Anne married John Glasby

My great grandmother's family came from Co Clare.  They emigrated to Australia 1859-1860.

I have just obtained a copy of her sister Anne's death certificate and this is the first document that mentions a specific place in Co Clare - Moghery.  She would have been born about 1825 (died 1895). Father was John and mother Anne.  It appears the family emigrated independently to Australia ie Anne her brother Martin and sisters Maryanne and Margaret.  (Margaret and Anne may have been married. I don't know.)  I presume the parents were dead or remained in Ireland.  Seeking information on Moghery - apparently it is a townland near Ennis but I can't find much else.  I have not had much luck tracing the family directly.  Hare is the earliest version of the name in Australia.  Planning to visit Clare in  September.

Mary,

What was the maiden name of Anne's mother.

In relation to the address for Anne' death, was this in Australia?

There are a number of locations in the County with various spellings of Maghera.

John Hehir was a common name. See 1901 Irish census and County Clare library  clarelibrary.ie/genealogy.

Regards,

McCoy

Thank you McCoy.   I guess the daughter (there were 2, neither of whom ever married) may have heard the name but never had to write it till the death certificate.  Possibly why no other documents I've come across state where in Co Clare.  My gt grandmother wrote to my grandfather before her death in 1893 so I presume her sister also could write but the need to spell out the name might not have been there.

The marriage records the gt grandmother's name as Meredith - it is a bit of a squiggle but 2 people believe that is what it is.  Civil records didn't require parents' names back in 1861 when she married.  All the family lived in Braidwood NSW, a gold mining town, but after John Glasby's death in the 1870s his wife, Anne, must have moved to Sydney.  The other sister did also but lived in a different part of the city.

I have seen another O'Hehir family in Braidwood referred to in old newspapers (Trove) also Co Clare but no idea if related.  My lot seem to have been free emigrants so none of the associated documents that assisted emigrants to Australia had. (It is interesting that the name went from Hare to O'Hair, O'Hare, O'Hehir (and spelt differently when the sisters inserted an in memoriam notice for their brother following his death in Braidwood in the 1880s).

Mary,

Attached details  of various civil parishes in County Clare with townlands "Maghera or similar". Source Griffith's Valuation 1851.

Clooney known as Clooney Quin, Kilmanaheen (Ennistimon), Inagh, Rath (Corrifin), Feakle, Magherabaun (Inagh and Feakle, Magheranraheen or Rockforest, Kilkeedy

Magherreagh, (obriensbridge.)

I have not found any parish or townland with the spelling "Moghery" in County Clare.

Regards,

McCoy

Thank you so much - the last one looks as if sounds the closest.  Ie Magherreagh.  It's likely the daughter made a guess as to the spelling or whomever was filling in the form for her.  She may not even have pronounced it correctly so as it is clear cut to us all these years later - at least it brings me somewhat closer to a particular part of Clare. Not just 'somewhere'!

Mary,

To add to previous Post, the following may be of interest:

Moyree - Parish of Ruan, Moyriesk - Parish Doora |(Ennis), Moyriesk - Parish of Clooney- Quin.

Surnames of Ireland by Dr. Edward MacLysaght records the name "Clashby" - Clasby as a variant of Gillespie. The name is mainly in Northern Ireland,

with a branch in County Galway.

Can you send a copy of Martin's memorial card

Hi - I just have his death notice - this is what informed me about the brother and two sisters.   According to  his death certificate he was 65, in the colony for about 23 years (fits with everyone else they arrived c 1860) and just Co Clare.

John Glasby died 1877 Braidwood parents Patrick and Honour (births, deaths, marriages index NSW)

Mary,

Thanks for the article in Trove newspaper. Unfortunately there is no mention of any relatives in County Clare.

The Hehir's in Braidwood may have information. Margaret apparently, lived in that area, so it is possible.

I attach a death record of Anne Glasby in 1895. Is she your relative.

Some information on Clare emigrants who went to New South Wales. Article by the founder of the Clare Heritage and Genealogy Centre in Corrofin.

Best Wishes,

McCoy

Thank you - I will read the article soon - that will be very good background.  Yes, it is her.  However, I got a copy of the full death certificate (there was a special offer for the King's Birthday long week end earlier in June) and that mentioned Mog...  I think your pinpointing Mar... above is the most likely as you can hear/see the similarity in the two words.   If I get time I might put in for her husband's full death certificate.  They only had the 2 daughters and neither married so that line died out and I won't be treading on anyone's toes!   As it happens I have my gt grandmother's travel chest she bought with her - bit rough but interesting piece of furniture!  I also have the letter she wrote my grandfather.
