Hannigan family

I'm trying to find where in Ireland my gt gt grandfather Patrick Hannigan originated from. I've traced him back as far as the 1851 Census which records him as a 28yr old lodger living in Eastwood Landward district of Renfrewshire, Scotland. His country of birth is Ireland. I can't find a record of him on the 1841 census, so presume he came to Scotland sometime after then & before 1851. I know he married 2nd Dec 1861 & his age is recorded as 40yrs which would put his year of birth 1821 although from his recorded age in the 1851 census, his year of  birth would be 1823.

Hi Bernadette,

There is a record of the baptism/birth of Patrick Hannigan in 1822 in Limerick on www.rootsireland.ie/

It will cost to view the record but will have his father/parents' name.

I went through the parishes and Galbally & Aherlow R C was where they were from.

There is a group for this parish on Irelandxo.

There are 3 Hannigans in the Tithe Applotments (free to search online) in Galbally, Limerick in 1830:

2 James and 1 Patrick.

Hi Col

Dear Bernadette

I believe Patrick Hannigan to be the son of Batt Hannigan and Bridget Murphy of Galbally Limerick. I am researching the Murphy family of Galbally and Curraghkilbran. Patrick their son wss born there in 1822. Siblings Michael 1823, James, 1829, Johanna 1831, Bartholemew 1842. My gg grandfather Patrick Troy and his wife Bridget Murphy were sponsors of Johanna ayt her christening.

Batt Hannihan was sponsor of Mary Troy born 1827 garrynalya downland. Mary was older sister to my g grandfather William Troy born Curraghkilbran 1840.

Dear Tania

Thanks for your message, unfortunately that Patrick Hannigan is not my ancestor as his parents were John Hannigan and Rose Anne Mullen, which I got from Patrick's marriage record 2nd December 1861, his age recorded as 40yrs would mean he was born 1821

Good luck with your research

Bernadette
