Gurtnamensa

RoscommonKillinvoy (Roscommon)

I'm researching a family that was listed in the tithe applotment books in Gurtnamensa townland, Killinvoy civil parish, Roscommon.  I can't find any later references to Gurtnamensa, or even anything with a similar name in Killinvoy.  Does anyone have any information about this townland?  Did it change its name to something else?  When I Google it the only thing that comes up is the tithe appointment book.

In looking at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing, I think Gurtnamensa evolved into Roverkilly townland in Rahara civil parish. Rahara is just to the southwest of Killinvoy parish. Compare the names in the 1827 Tithe listing for Gurtnamensa to the 1855 Griffiths for Rahara parish and specifically Roverkilly. https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/roscommon/killinvoy.htm

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, that's a good possibility.  And while looking at Rahara civil parish I noticed that it included a Gurtnamonsa townland at the time of the tithe applotments ... and the households in Gurtnamonsa were almost identical to those in Gurtnamensa, Killinvoy.  It must have been a townland that straddled the border of Killinvoy and Rahara parishes.

Megan:

Townlands were not standardized until the 1851 census so at the time of the Tithes you just had place names.
